Chapter 6

"Whose ass I gotta beat?"

I turned to look at my mom who just came in from work. I smiled when Taliah let out a little laugh. She's doing better than last time.

At the end of our sophomore year, T saw Kylie kiss this other girl, Sonia. She was a wreck for a week straight, until my mom talked to her. I have no idea what she said, but I'm just glad it helped.

"Hi, Aunty." Taliah said, hugging my mom while sniffling.

My mom wrapped her arms around her. "What happened, T?" She asked, concerned.

Taliah shook her head. "I don't feel like talking about it, Aunty." She said, pulling away.

My mom nodded. "That's ok." She said as she reached out to hug me. "You doing good, Baby?" I nodded. "Alright. Taliah are you going to sleep over?"

Taliah nodded. She had called her dad as soon as we got home, and she always had extra stuff at our house.

My mom clapped her hands. "Great. Let me go change and we can order chinese and watch disney movies." She said, going upstairs.

My phone vibrated as she left. I looked at it to see a text from Emily. We had gotten close over the last two weeks.

Emily👀: Hey! Do you and T wanna sleep over tonight?

I was about to respond 'no' when my mom came downstairs still in her scrubs.

"What's wrong?" T and I asked at the same time.

She looked at us with disappointment. "Nurse Ratchet, I mean Riley, decided to have a headache. So I have to go back in." She said, rolling her eyes.

"Aww." Taliah said with a pout. I know she had been looking forward to spending some time with mom. Especially now with the whole Kylie thing.

Hoping to cheer her up some other way, I showed her the text. "You wanna go?" I whispered.

Her eyes lit up as she read it and she nodded her head. "Ask your mom real quick." She said tapping my shoulder frantically.

I nodded my head and followed my mom as she was walking through the door. "Hey, Mom?" She looked at me. "Can T and I sleep over at Emily's tonight?"

She raised her eyebrow at me. "Have I met this Emily?"

"No, but she's the one T and I have been talking about for a minute." I said, hoping that would convince her to let us go.

She sighed. "Alright," She said getting into her car. "but I'mma need her parents' full names, their address, their phone numbers and everything."

"Yes, ma'am." I said, giving her a kiss on the cheek.

"Y'all figure out how you're gonna get there and make sure T tells her parents!" She yelled to me as she reversed off our driveway.

I gave her a thumbs up and pulled my phone out to text Em.

R: For sure. Can you pick us up?

E: Bet, send me your addy

I sent her my address as I walked back into the house to see T opening up a bag of Lays.

"So what's good?" She asked, putting some chips in her mouth.

I stole a few. "We're good to go." I replied, walking upstairs with her trailing behind me. I handed her a backpack from the hallway. "Go get your stuff and let your parents know we're staying at Em's instead."

"Got it." She said, moving to do just that.

I went into my room to pack my sleepover necessities. By the time I was done Emily texted me to let me know she was outside.

"T, she's here!" I yelled as I walked downstairs.

I reached the bottom of the stairs to see her already walking through the door. I followed, locking the door behind me as I stepped out of the house.

Taliah made herself comfortable on the carpeted floor. "And can you believe she did it again?" She asked us, arranging her head wrap.

I didn't want to say 'I told you so', so I just continued to look at myself in the mirror while putting on my bonnet.

We were now in Emily's room with snacks set out. Comfortable in our pajamas, we had been talking non-stop and T was now on the topic of the she-devil.

Once I finished putting my braids up for the night, I walked towards her and gave her a quick hug. "Trash will be trash." I said giving her a quick peck on her forehead.

Emily laughed. "Yeah. I don't understand how a person can cheat on someone as perfect as you though." She said, eating a chip.

I looked at T in time to see her cheeks redden. "Enough about me." She said turning towards me. "Ri, how's your little boo thing?"

"Oooh Ria has a boo thing?" Em asked.

I suddenly found my phone more interesting. "Girl, I don't know what she's talking about." I said, not looking up.

T kissed her teeth. "She wanna be shy now. There's this boy she's been talking abo-"

Oh fuck no. "I'm gonna go get water." I walked out of the room, not wanting to hear Taliah talking about my 'crush' on Liam as if I'm not even there.

I flipped on the light switch going downstairs. As I turned the corner into the kitchen, I ran into a solid chest.

"Oh my bad." The voice said.

I looked up and was met with grey eyes.

"Ain't no fucking way."
