Chapter 24

It took some time and convincing, but Amity managed to get Luz to come back to school. As the two of them entered the classroom on Monday morning, Mrs. Halle welcomed Luz back with open arms. But Luz only nodded in acknowledgment. Luz had been relapsing back into silence more and more lately. She had no idea what to do, she couldn't even touch her guitars, she would look at the instruments, but she would never play them.

All she did in school that day in class was read the Good Witch Azura, and not even pay attention to the teachers. Luz could feel people staring at her. She didn't go to the music room during lunch, nor did she want lunch. Even the smallest bits of food made her feel sick to her stomach. So she opted to hide in the bathroom, then Amity wouldn't try to get her to eat. As she sat under the sink in the corner, she heard the door open, then unfamiliar voices spoke.

"I heard Luz Noceda is back today." Luz held her breath, not wanting to reveal her position.

"The girl who plays guitar? Isn't she dating Amity Blight?"

"Yeah, that's the one. She's a total freak, doesn't talk to anyone except Amity and her friends."

"That is strange..."

"Amity can do so much better if you ask me. Noceda may be good at music, but she's just weird. I mean, she can't even defend herself, she got pummeled by that guy." Luz looked down ashamedly. The girls chatted for a few minutes about something else, then they left. Luz came out from under the sink and washed her hands. Lunch was just about over, and she had to get to her math class. She tried to take her mind off of what those girls said, but she couldn't. It lingered in the back of her head for the rest of the day. By the time she got into Amity's car when school ended, she knew what she needed to do

"Amity?"

"Yeah, Luz?"

"I think I need help." Amity looked at her confusedly.

"What do you mean by help?" Luz sighed.

"Like, mental help." Amity's face took on a look of understanding. Luz continued. "I keep feeling really sad all the time, I get a lot of scary thoughts, and I don't know what to do." Amity nodded, and kissed Luz on the cheek.

"I'll do my best to help you find a therapist. We'll get this figured out, okay?" Luz nodded then turned to look out the window.

"It's very nice to see you again, Luz." Said Dr. Kikimora. Luz had been called in to discuss the recent events that had happened.

"It's good to see you again too." The two of them spent the next hour and a half talking about Luz's experience at Hexside, what was going to happen to Jared, and finding a good psychologist to help her through her anxiety. Luz left the meeting feeling reassured and hopeful, two things she had not felt for a long time. The next few weeks passed by alright for Luz. She got her cast removed, was able to go home, played her guitar and was doing decently in school. She was seeing a therapist every week, and was feeling much more relaxed.

While Luz knew her struggles weren't over and that there was a lot more work to be done, she was looking forwards instead of back, keeping her eyes open and ahead instead of on the ground. As she made her way towards the future and accepted her past, Luz couldn't help but hear a song in her head.

She thought about her mom, and how much support she had given to Luz. That she was strong and brave.

She thought about her friends. How they were supportive and never judged her.

Finally, she thought about Amity, how she had given Luz unconditional love and acceptance. No matter how bad the situation got, Amity was always by her side.
