As Kayla brushed her hair, she hummed along to the music of 'Hope 7' playing as her phone vibrated on the dresser causing her to check the message

Kayla looked up from the messages and looked at herself in the mirror. After a few minutes of thinking Kayla sighs and responds before putting her phone down

"I'm dumb as hell" Kayla shakes her head as she starts to pack a bag with items for tonight and tomorrow morning.
About an hour later Kayla sat at the dinning table of the Gilbert family with Bonnie and Stefan in silence
Playing with the food on her plate as she glanced at Bonnie who was also pushing the food around, then to Elena who was glancing back and forth between her best friend and boyfriend, and lastly at Stefan who was slowly eating his food waiting to be spoken to.
"Well...this is awkward"
Elena's eyes snap to Kayla in a pleasing manner, almost begging her to start a conversation
"Sooo, let's talk about school. We have nothing else in common anyway-" Kayla starts as she sips her lemonade
"Oh that's right!" Elena starts nodding at Kayla
"I saw you with the football players, did Tanner give you a hard time today?"
Stefan smiled lightly "Well, he let me on the team, so I must have done something right"
Elena laughed turning to Bonnie and Kayla explaining the events that happened earlier today
"You guys should have seen Stefan today. Tyler threw a ball right at him, and-"
Bonnie forced a strained smile as she interrupted her friend "Yeah, I heard"
Kayla leaned back in her seat biting her lip to keep from laughing but not being very successful as a muffled laugh came from her direction "mhm my bad"
Elena looked in Kayla's direction again asking for help with her eyes once more
" B, Why don't you tell my cousin about your family" Kayla offered
"Um, divorced. No mom. Live with my dad-"
"You know damn well what I was tal-"
"I think she meant the witches. Bonnie's family has a lineage of witches. It's really cool" Elena spoke up looking at Stefan who had his hand covering his mouth to hide an amused smile
"Cool isn't the word I'd use"
"Well, it's certainly interesting. I'm not too versed, but I do know that there's a history of Celtic druids that migrated here in the 1800s"
"How the freak do you know that?"
Bonnie sat up straight in her chair as the she and the couple ignored Kayla "My family came by way of Salem"
"Really? Salem witches?" Stefan asked intrigued as Bonnie nodded "Yea"
"I would say that's pretty cool"
"Really? Why?"
Stefan leans back as he begins to explain "Salem witches are heroic examples of individualism and nonconformity"
Hearing his reasoning the Bennett teen smiled "Yeah, they are"
"What do you do in your free time Stefan? Like do you-" Kayla turned to her cousin but pausing as the doorbell rings
"I wonder who that could be" Elena gets up to go opens the door, her eyes widened as she saw Caroline and Damon outside
"Surprise! Kayla said you were doing dinner, so we brought dessert" Caroline grinned as she moved inside going to hug Kayla who stood not too far behind Stefan and Elena next to Bonnie
"Oh"
Damon stood outside the door smiling at the Gilbert girl "Hope you don't mind"
Before she could respond Stefan spoke up "What are you doing here?"
"Waiting for Elena to invite me in"
"Oh, yeah, you can-"
"No, no, no. He can't, uh...he can't stay. Can you, Damon?"
Kayla stared at the brothers trying to get a read on them as she held the desert Caroline bought
"Get in here" Caroline walked back towards the door
Stefan looked at Elena shaking his head "We're just...finishing up, Kayla you ready?"
"Caroline just brought desert, you can head home I'm staying over anyways" Kayla shrugged as she headed into the kitchen to get plates
"You are?" Elena asked
"Mhmm your brother asked me to"
"He did?"
"Yes. That's what I said...keep up babe"
"Umm it's fine. Just come on in" Elena rubbed her head and shrugged inviting Damon in
Kayla came out the kitchen with a fork and walked to the living room, as she sat down she looked over her shoulder and watched Damon step in slowly. The girl turned back to her desert with calculated eyes as she pulled her feet up while everyone came into the living room to sit and talk
"cannot believe that Mr. Tanner let you on the team. Tyler must be seething. But good for you. Go for it" Caroline spoke as she sat next to Kayla on the arm rest of the couch next to Damon
Damon nodded "That's what I always tell him. You have to engage. You can't just sit there and wait for life to come to you. You have to go get it"
"Okay motivational speaker"
The blonde Forbes hummed "Yeah, Elena wasn't so lucky today. It's only because you missed summer camp. God, I don't know how you're ever going to learn the routines"
Bonnie looked at Kayla who was looking at Caroline in question with a raised eyebrow before speaking "I'll work with her. She'll get it"
The Forbes and Salvatore pair made eye contact
"I guess we can put her in the back" the blonde shrugged as Kayla shook her head and went back to eating her desert
"You know, you don't seem like the cheerleader type, Elena" Damon added turning to the girl
"Oh, it's just 'cause her parents-" Caroline started but was cut off by Kayla
"Alright why are we talking about this? I didn't come over here to be Oprah and talk about why Elena does or doesn't give off cheerleading energy"
Elena sighed thankful for Kayla stopping the conversation when the front door opened and Jeremy walked in, he started walking towards the stairs trying to avoid Elena and her friends when he saw Kayla and smiled
"Oh hey, you wanna come up?"
"Yea, they're boring now"
"I could've told you that" Jeremy shrugged and grabbed the Juicy Couture bag by the stairs that Kayla brought and heading up to his room
Once the group down stairs heard the door shut they looked back at each other
"I seriously had no clue they knew knew each other" Elena shook her head as Bonnie shrugged "I thought they were acquainted because of art class"
Caroline laughed "Oh they're acquainted alright"
"Ew" The Salvatore brother cringed
