Alex pov:

As I walked down the stairs after Mia, I couldn't help but notice just how many stairs there were in this place. It was almost as if the designer of this building specifically wanted to torture me. My legs were feeling quite sore from the sudden exercise. Thankfully, Mia seemed to take no notice of me and kept walking at a rapid pace, so I did my best to keep up with her. Even worse I had to walk from Ashley's room on the top floor.

I was practically running down the stairs to the point where I was gasping for breath when I got to the bottom.

I need to do more exercise.

When I looked up I saw that Mia had just disappeared on me. I took a deep breath as I slowly walked over to the outside living room. Which I still think is a ridiculous thing to have, but still it is really cool when you are in there.

As I was about to open the door, I heard a man's voice coming from inside, which made me pause and press my ear against the door. I knew that listening to someone's conversation without their permission was wrong and rude, but my curiosity got the better of me and I wanted to know what was going on inside. I kept listening for a few more seconds, trying to make out what the man was saying.

The man's voice was strained and he sounded like he'd been crying, he was halfway through saying something when he was interrupted by Ashley's cold, angry voice. "Stop fucking calling me." I heard her hiss.

Who the hell was she talking to? I fucked up too bad by eavesdropping, I should've just minded my business and kept my nose out of her business. If she knew I'd probably be in so much trouble.

I needed to stop overthinking, I'm sure it's all fine, and there's nothing that Ashley can't handle, right?

I took a few deep breaths before opening the door and walking inside. Once I entered the room, my gaze immediately landed on Ashley, ignoring everything else in the room. I took a few more steps towards her, keeping my focus on her as if she were the only thing in the world.

Ashley looked up at me, meeting my gaze. It felt like her eyes were burning holes in mine. She seemed tense and stressed, I assumed it was from the phone call that had just happened.

"Are you alright?" I whispered, concerned for her.

She signed and nodded. "Yeah, yeah, I'm fine." I didn't believe a word she said but I knew that I shouldn't press her for more information when she clearly didn't want to give it out. She patted next to her on the sofa. "Sit." She ordered, her cold tone returning.

I quickly walked over to the sofa and sat down next to her. I don't know why but I always felt like I had to obey her, there was something about her. It was as though she had some invisible power over me.

Ashley ran her finger through her hair as she looked at the floor. She seemed a little nervous but I couldn't tell why. She cleared her throat and looked up at me. "Do you remember when I comforted you in the car?" Her voice was softer than normal.

How could I forget, I cried in her arms until I fell asleep. Something my father would disown me for if he ever found out.

I nodded and looked down. "Yeah... I remember." I mumbled, not wanting to meet her gaze. I didn't know why she was bringing this up, it was pretty embarrassing for me.

"Why did you say that we were 'only on paper'?" Ashley said slowly, her voice was soft, curious, and something else. I couldn't help but notice the hint of emotion in her voice that I hadn't heard before.

Wait was she hurt that I said that? She wasn't, she couldn't be, right? I mean I wasn't lying, it is true.

I wasn't sure what I was meant to say, so I hesitated for a moment before starting to speak. "I..." I started. I wanted to try and reason as to why I said what I said, but the words somehow got stuck in my throat. I tried to continue, but the more I tried to think of something to say, the more overwhelmed I felt.
