NATIONAL ANTHEM
Jade sat across the table from Jack, who was very seriously looking through the menu.
It was the second night of spring break, and he insisted on taking her out for dinner at least once while they were off school.
" Know what you're getting?",
He groaned, " There's so many options, no clue. You?",
" Kinda want pizza, but they're huge here",
She gave him a look, Jack throwing his head back slightly as she began to laugh.
" We shared last time we came",
Jade smiled, " Pleaseeee, J? I don't want to get something if I'm not gonna finish it all",
" Okay, okay", he said shaking his head, " Fine. You have to order though",
The girl nodded happily, quickly ordering once the waiter came to their table.
Jack watched her closely as she interacted with the girl taking their order, Jade just openly being a nice person, like she always did.
" You have a staring issue",
He shrugged, " Only when it comes to you",
Jade felt her cheeks heat up, scoffing at the older boy as he just gave her a small smirk.
" Isn't it crazy, you're almost a senior",
Jack nodded, " Yeah. Kinda scary though, not being in high school anymore",
" It'll be fun. Plus, you're gonna get drafted, so it'll be even more fun", she smiled.
Jade watched as his face dropped a bit at the mention of the draft, the girl immediately regretting saying anything about it.
" Hey, it's gonna be good", she encouraged, " What's wrong?",
" Nothing, don't worry about it",
She eyed him, the boy smiling a bit.
" It'll be good. I'm excited",
Jade could tell he was lying, Jack mostly trying to convince himself that he was excited to be leaving Michigan, his family, her.
Once the two got silent, their pizza came, like it was perfect timing. Jack thanked the waiter, Jade and him just eating as they both thought about what their lives would be like in a year.
Jack drove her home, pulling into her driveway.
" Sorry about mentioning the draft, I thought you were excited. That's my fault",
" No", he said as he turned to her, " I am excited. Trust me. But I don't wanna leave, you know? I have a really good life here",
Jade nodded, " Yea, but it's gonna be amazing",
" But being here with you is more amazing", Jack said in an almost quiet voice.
" Jack, I can guarantee that you getting drafted isn't gonna ruin us", Jade said, " We both know that",
Jack leaned over the console, placing a soft kiss on her lips.
" Yeah, it's not gonna ruin us",
