Nova Rijn

Puck and I didn't have any lessons together, since he was a year older than me and was therefore a grade higher. I had helped Puck stop his nosebleed, making me miss my entire math class. Not that I cared, but Puck had felt guilty. Puck and I were now walking to my next class, because I had no idea where I had to go.

"Here it is."

He pointed to a door in the middle of a hallway on the second floor.

"Thanks Puck." I shouted after him, since he had already turned around to go to his own class. I stood still in front of the door for a second and closed my eyes.

Breathe in, breathe out, Nova.

I opened my eyes again and entered the classroom. It was noisy and most people were having conversation amongst themselves. No one was in their seat and the teacher wasn't here yet either.

I immediately walked to the back and took a seat in the left corner of the classroom. I put my bag on the table and turned my head so that I could look outside. My arms were draped around my bag and my upper body was lying on the table.

It wasn't as sunny as it was this morning; the clouds had turned grey. It looked like it would rain any second.

And I was right. Not soon after I had thought that, the first raindrops started falling. Fascinated, I looked at the raindrops splashing onto the hard ground.

"Nova Rijn." I looked up, startled. Had I already done something wrong?

"Is Nova Rijn present?" the man called again. He looked to be in his late forties and his bald head didn't make him look any younger. He was wearing a shirt that was too tight and it looked like the buttons would snap off any moment. I mentally chuckled.

"Here!" I said raised my hand.

"Okay..." he mumbled. "Is Dani Tas present?"

It took a while before he had checked off his list. I didn't mind, I was amusing myself by looking outside. The raindrops just kept falling; they were infinite. As soon as one splashed into the ground, a new one appeared.

"Please open your books at page 57," the teacher continued. Sighing, I opened my bag and pulled my books out.

Bored, I opened my book and stared at the content. Like I said before, me and math didn't go together, but I hadn't been clear enough. I wasn't really good at any subjects, although English was doable. The man continued his explanation about grammar in a monotone voice.

I wasn't really paying attention, the rain was much more interesting than the whole story about some stupid grammar. That's how the rest of the class went by: I stared outside and he just kept blabbing while nobody was listening.

After what seemed like an eternity the bell rang and I left the class with the horde. I followed a few girls who were talking about what was going to happen in physics. A class that I also had. One of the girls had long, blonde hair and looked a little like a Barbie wannabe with all the make-up on her face. She had long legs and was slim. Her friend looked the same. The only differences between them were their hair and eye colors. The Barbie wannabe's friend had long, black hair and pastel colored eyes.

I softly groaned from the hard time I was having walking up the stairs. I wasn't exactly the sporty type. At the door was the teacher for my next class. Her grey hair was tied together in a tight bun on top of her head and the small glasses made her look even more stern than her wrinkly forehead already did.

Together with the other students I walked into the classroom and prepared myself for the most boring hour of the day.

I closed my locker after I had switched books. I dwelled around the school for a bit in the hopes of finding the cafeteria. Or Puck, so he could show me the way. After walking about ten circles I finally found one of the two.

I opened the doors and walked into the cafeteria. It was a huge space with lots of occupied tabled and chairs. There were clearly cliques. All the popular kids sat with each other, just like the nerds and so on. It was exactly like you always saw it on television. I grabbed my apple from my bag and took a bite while I looked for a place to sit. I calmly kept walking, ignoring the shouting and blabbing around me. I saw Puck sitting at a table.

"Hey Puck!" I yelled and waved at him. With a terrified expression he looked up. He relaxed when he saw that it was me. He then gestured for me to sit next to him and with a smile on my face I walked over to him.

"Hey!" he answered cheerfully after taking a sip of his water. Something was different about him, only I didn't know what. Something in his face.

I examined his face thoroughly.

The bruise! The bruise was gone!

But, what- huh?

I shoved the chair next to his backwards and sat down. Even though I barely knew Puck, I felt at ease around him. As if I had known him for years.

We started talking about everything and nothing. He told me his favorite color and music and I did the same. He was a lonely child and had just turned seventeen.

"What? No, really! The smu-" my sentence was interrupted by a low voice. Puck winced when he heard the voice and the low voice started laughing.
