For my current writing project I've included the use of magic. As any reader of this series knows, I've very fond of Writing Excuses. Something they talk about a lot of the use of a cohesive and internally consistent magic system.
Personally, I think they focus too much on it. I mean, look at Harry Potter. The story is there to serve the plot, there is no system to speak of, and magic can do just about anything (or not to anything) that the plot allows. But I think it can help you with your writing to know what your magic can do, if not to dwell on in the story, then to give you some good guide posts for your story.
This is an excellent beginner's guide, and one that allows for improvisation. Check it out if you need to add a little magic to your story.
Rating: 4/5 a good jumping off point
