My first imagine request! Thank you @shannon1300! I changed the ending slightly because I thought it would be more fitting giving his age at the time but I hope you still like what I wrote x

The day has arrived, like we both knew it inevitably would. Today is the day that my boyfriend of four years will face his greatest fear in the form of a music video - deep water. Shawn Mendes is a name many are familiar with worldwide, a fact that Shawn is all too aware of. He strives to make his music the very best it can be, and lives his life in a way that he hopes makes his fans proud. Although this is one of the qualities that love most about him, it can also be his downfall. The opinions of his fans matter so much to him that he's willing to do anything for them, including facing his biggest fears.

The music video for Mercy is definitely one of my favourites from what I have seen so far on the shoot. It's raw and gripping, something I know the fans and critics alike will love. However that's only after seeing the scenes filmed away from the water, scenes that Shawn can breeze through easily. Now it's time for the filming to begin in the water, and we're both terrified.

Shawn's hand grips mine as we ride side by side in the back of a production car on the way to the lake where the final scenes will be shot. His jaw is clenched and his eyes dart around the place at the speed of light as his panic grows. I gently take his chin in my free hand and turn his head to face me, kissing him softly. As I pull away he pulls me against him in a tight hug.
"You'll be okay, Shawn," I whisper in his ear, wrapping my arms tighter around him. "I promise."
"How do you know that, Shannon?" he says quietly, my heart breaking as his voice cracks.
"Because I do. And when have I ever been wrong before?"
"Never." His voice is barely audible.
"Exactly. So trust me, you will be okay. I'll be right there the whole time and I won't let anything happen. But nothing will happen because you will ace this shoot, like always. You know why? Because you're Shawn freakin' Mendes, the most talented and amazing person I know."
I feel Shawn take a deep breath and release it, an effort to calm his nerves. "I love you." He presses a soft kiss to my forehead.
"I love you too. Now go kick that water's ass!" I grin as we pull up alongside the lake.

"Ready Shawn?" The director asks, already standing behind the camera. Shawn, seated in the car floating in the water, definitely does not look ready, his face white as a sheet as he grips the steering wheel so hard you can clearly see the veins standing up in his hands, yet he nods. "I'm ready."
"And... action!" The director yells, making me jump. Immediately the car slowly begins to fill up with water, and I can see the panic on Shawn's face clear as anything. He fights against it though, singing along to the track at the top of his voice to distract himself. Soon the car is nearly fully submerged in the water, and I can feel myself beginning to shake. Please be okay. Please be okay. I repeat in my head, my eyes glued to the sinking car. Strangely enough, nobody else seems to be worried, their main focus on how this all looks on the screen, which is currently showing Shawn thrashing and shouting in the water. This must be what is supposed to happen given the looks of approval on their faces. However, a feeling of dread still settles in my stomach.

Not soon enough the director shouts cut, pleased with how the recording went. I eagerly wait for Shawn to resurface, my feet already standing right at the water's edge. However, a few minutes pass and there's no sign of him.
"Where is he?" I shout at no one in particular.
A few people shrug, a slight look of worry on their faces. He should be up by now. I should be able to see him. Before anyone can stop me I dive into the lake, the water stinging at my eyes as I force them open. It takes a few seconds for my eyes to adjust but I quickly spot the car, along with Shawn frantically trying to escape. He's having a panic attack. I swim over as fast as I can, anxiety racing through my veins, but I reach him too late. His eyes are closing and his body is limp as I drag him through the window and to the surface of the water using all my body strength.

"Help! Someone help me!" I yell frantically as I struggle to pull my boyfriend from the water. Immediately there are people surrounding me, pushing me out of the way as they lift him onto the cold concrete. I fight my way through them to get to him again. "Someone do something!" I shout, my voice cracking. No one makes any sign of movement though, too shocked to think of what to do. I've never given CPR before but I don't have a choice right now. Without hesitation I perform the correct procedures on Shawn, whose skin is ashy white.

After three rounds of chest compressions his eyes shoot open as his body is shocked back to life and he splutters water through his mouth. I turn him onto his side, rubbing his back as he retches water, tears streaming down his face. When he has calmed down, his chest still slightly heaving, I throw myself on him and bury my face in his soaked chest as he wraps his arms around me like he'll never let go again.
"I thought I lost you," I sob, his T-shirt clenched in my fists.
"You saved my life." He rasps, his head buried in my hair. "I love you so much."
"I love you so much more."

That night, after Shawn is given the all clear to leave the hospital following all the usual cautionary procedures, he drives us to a quiet beach he found a while back.
"What are we doing here?" I ask drowsily, tired from the events that took place.
"You'll see." Shawn kisses my forehead before getting out of the car and racing to my side to open the door for me. "M'lady." He bows, offering me his hand.
I take it, grinning. "What a gentlemen."
We walk in silence along the water's edge for a few minutes, Shawn's arm wrapped protectively around me.

"How are you feeling?" I ask, laying out a blanket I found in the back of the car and beckoning for him to join me.
"Alive." He lets out a dry chuckle and I whack him softly in the chest.
"That's not funny."
"I know, I'm sorry." He pulls me on top of him so my chest is pressed against his and my head lies on his shoulder. "Thank you."
"For what?"
"For saving my life." He says softly.
"You don't have to thank me." I raise my head to look him in the eyes. "I'll do it again and again if I have to."
"Hopefully you won't have to." Shawn frowns. "I love you. I need to say that more. You're the best person I've ever met and I can't imagine my life without you. I don't want to imagine my life without you."
"Shawn..." I begin, sensing the mood shifting.
"Marry me." He interrupts, his eyes firmly set on mine. "Not now." He quickly adds, seeing the confusion on my face. "When we're older and our lives aren't the mess that they are now. I know were only young but I also know that, Shannon Y/S/N, you are the only girl for me. I love you more than I ever thought was possible to love another person. Please marry me?" His voice is soft, and I can see the worry on his face.
"Yes." I grin, tears streaming down my face as I press my lips against his. "Yes, I will marry you Shawn Peter Raul Mendes. Yes, yes, yes." I say between kisses "I love you."

By now we're both smiling, our kisses a whirlwind of clashing teeth and tender pecks turned into a passionate, heated make out session fuelled by love. Today, I nearly lost the love of my life, but instead he was given a second chance and I couldn't be more grateful.
