FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA'S AUDITION PROCESS WAS ABSOLUTELY INSANE AND CRAZY.

The entire cast of "The Outsiders" had claimed that the way that Coppola set up the audition process was insane and wasn't like anything anyone had seen before (Which, if you were a young actor, it might have been slightly nerve-racking). Apparently, he had everyone that was trying out in the same room, together, watching each other audition (Which is not normal at all). Sometimes, Francis would pull random people and say, "Alright, Decaprio, Lowe, Macchio, and Lane. I want you all to do the drive-in scene, and Decaprio will play Dally, Lowe will play Johnny, Lane will play Cherry, and Macchio will play Ponyboy." He'll make random people play random parts (Parts that they did not try out for) and see if they could play it equally as good. Ralph Macchio (Johnny Cade) later claimed that he would be disappointed whenever Coppola would make him play different parts because he wanted Johnny really badly. Matt Dillon (Dallas Winston) also said that he always made C. Thomas Howell (Ponyboy Curtis) play Ponyboy, no matter what. He would always switch people out, but Howell would stay. He would switch Matt and make him play Steve, and Howell would stay. Everyone knew that Tommy would get the role before the cast list was even submitted.
