I began to pad away from Shade; his jaw dropping at my simple answer. Though, that one word - which I did not know - would cause many problems for me in the future.

"N-no?!" He cried, making me stop and glance over my shoulder with my stony eyes. "No. No, I won't be your mate. Can you get that around that thick skull of yours? Hm?" I snapped, rapidly pacing away from him. My heart was beating so fast, I'd've thought that it would come pounding out my chest.

"But... Shadow wait!" He bounded after me, so I stopped, and waited for him. "I'm your future Alpha, so... you have to do what I say. Be my mate." He tried, but his authoritative voice had no effect on me - I had grown up without an Alpha, making me immune to the strength of their Alpha tone.

"Nice try." I muttered, swerving around him and padding back to camp.

"But..." He whispered, making me stop once more. I growled at myself, 'Don't do it. Don't do it. Don't do it.'

I turned back around and slowly walked up to him. He watched me with wide eyes, then they closed gently as I licked his cheek. "No, Shade. I won't be your mate." I murmured, before gracefully leaning back and bounding away into the underbrush. Why did he have such a big effect on m- I snarled at myself angrily; I did not feel anything. I do not feel anything. I will not feel anything. I was numb. I am numb. I will be numb.

Yet, in reality, I would rather feel pain than nothing at all - even heartache.

I had reached the main clearing of the packs camp, and was slowly trudging through it, thinking hard about everything that had happened that day, when I saw a parade of warrior-looking males padding forwards to the Alpha's den. Their fur was stained with battle markings and war paint. I admired the way it gave them a dangerous aura. Were these the warriors I had read about?

I sat on the side, watching them with renewed curiosity. A select few looked at me with different expressions in their eyes - disgust, curiosity, lust and admiration. One male gave me a wink, and I just rolled my eyes. "Men." I uttered quietly, before turning on my heels and sauntering away to my cave.

"Sha-" I began as I saw Shade sitting in the doorway of my cave, but he growled lowly, silencing me. "Don't speak until I've finished. No, I haven't accepted your rejection, but tonight, just this night, have me sleep in your cave once more. Please." He murmured, padding up to me until our noses were a mere inch apart. "Please." He repeated, gazing into my eyes.

And, just like that, my numb facade crumbled.

Okay, okay, okay! I decided to leave it there, as a really short chapter but the next one will be extra long so... :3 Anyways, vote, follow and comment ;)
