It was the next day and Eli was already at the cafe by 12 so he could get an extra few hours to learn more French from his learning book which was extremely complicated to read as most of it was in French and that was something he was terrible at.
He stayed sat down at his table flicking through the pages of the book whilst constantly looking at the time, waiting for Maeve to finally arrive. If anyone was going to be late, it would be her.
The bell then rang, signalling that someone had entered the cafe. Eli looked up from his book to see Maeve walking in. She was wearing a pair of jeans, a Jeff Buckley shirt along with a pair of black converse.
He noticed the bags under her eyes and couldn't help but feel concerned, despite his known hatred for her. "Hey." Eli spoke up, catching her attention.
"Hey." Maeve replied, her voice sounding drained and tired as she sat down next to him. "You didn't have to do this, y'know?"
"I know but it sounded like you needed the extra help." Eli shrugged his shoulders, closing the book shut.
"Aren't you gonna need that?" Maeve asked him in a confused tone.
"Nope, did you forget I'm a genius at French?" He jokingly responded but she didn't think much of it.
"I'll be the judge of that, Hewson." She gave him a sarcastic glare, putting her bags down and getting up to go and order a drink.
As Maeve was up getting a drink, Eli was sat at the table freaking out. He was terrible at French, there was no way he could get away with being a "genius". Why did I say that? He thought to himself in annoyance.
Eli wanted to punch himself in the face. Why did I agree to this? He asked himself, covering his face with his hands.
"You okay?" Maeve suddenly returned to the table. "Not that I care but you're sweating like crazy." She told him.
"All good." Elijah lied, shaking his head. "Just can't wait to teach French, y'know?" He spoke enthusiastically.
Maeve gave him a weird look before sitting back down. "You're acting weirder than usual." She pulled a face at him.
"Am I?" Eli questioned, pretending to have no idea what was wrong as he took a sip from his drink.
"Yeah, are you sure you're okay?" Maeve repeated, looking into his eyes for a reason.
"Just tired." Eli said, rubbing his eyes tirelessly as he looked up at her.
He wasn't entirely lying when he'd said that to Maeve. Elijah had stayed up all night learning French for her, how he did it? He had no absolutely no idea but that wasn't what he was focused on right now.
The thing on his mind was actually teaching it to her as he wasn't the genius he claimed to be about it. "Can I look at the assignment? So I can see what we need to work on." Eli asked, not entirely lying about the "we" bit of his sentence as he very much needed to work on his French.
Maeve nodded and pulled out the assignment and handed it over to him without hesitation. She watched him read through it and couldn't help but notice his features, like how beautiful his eyes were, not like that was anything important, it was just a thought, nothing more.
