The Night I Threw My Heart Away

The night I threw away my heart
Was the day I decided I needed closure.

Cold, dried ink was kept in the dark,
But it was ringing in my heart to acknowledge this part of you is over.

I didn't want to give us away,
I was always going to keep my promises anyway,

But life had other plans
And the direction was no longer in my hands-

Or maybe it was never in my hands at all.

Years later, approaching another season of fall,
I may have changed

And the house that was being built has broken window panes,
But though my heart and soul have moved from place to place, you may have gone but you remained.

It was never up to I
To decide

Where we were going to be in life,
But I'll always remember

That December
I realized I did love you and wanted you to be my forever.

Counted hours have passed,
But my heart still clings to you and cannot make you my past, because you were my love, at last.
