Sad facts: The themes in this novel I have faced myself. Many of the scenarios I have lived out. Eden is very much me.
Disordered eating is a strong theme within this novel. For years, I used to struggle with disordered eating. It was a symptom of the lack of value and worth I felt within myself. Seeking perfection by losing weight was a distraction from my own unaddressed internal needs. Trying to gain a sense of value and worth in the eyes of others and oneself through perfectionism is unwinnable. Perfectionism is denialism in its purest form.
Accepting my disordered eating as destructive was the single most important (and courageous) thing I have ever done. As eating disorder sufferers would know, 'the voice' masquerades as a friend. The road to recovery is very much "fall down seven times, stand up eight". But know that full recovery is possible. I am living proof.
I send my love.
