2 Days After:

The red table cloth.  Chairs.  The woman sitting across from me.

"I want to see Lillie," I struggle to say.  The woman's face goes from pleasant to uncomfortable.  Eyes look nervously around.  A sigh.  Eyes looking into mine.

"You can't."

"Why?" I ask.  A cough.

"She..." the woman looks even more uncomfortable.  "I didn't want to tell you.  I was hoping you didn't have the memories..."

"I can remember who I was with when the accident happened," I whisper.  The woman looks at me sharply.  "This is the only thing I can remember.  I don't remember you.  I don't remember what it was like before."

A look of hurt.  Moments passing.  A sigh.

"Lillie has passed away," the woman says.  The sensation of shock.  "She died from her injuries the day the accident happened."

I didn't have to ask about Riley.  I already know the answer.
