Ashton: 7:13AM
good morning,
starshine,the earth
says, "hello."

Luke: 7:42AM
Goodmorninggggg

Ashton: 7:47AM
did you know that
even if they've never
seen it before, blind
people still smile when
they're happy? because
smiling is a basic
human instinct.

Luke: 7:49AM
Then why is it so hard
to do?

Ashton: 7:48AM
it's not. people put so
much pressure into the
smallest things. you don't
have to be extremely
happy in order to smile,
it's the small things that
make it so much easier
to do such a simple gesture.

Luke: 7:50AM
You don't understand
how hard of a concept
that is for me to process.
What do you mean? Of
course, I fake smile all
the time, but surely that's
not what you mean. It's
not real, much like my
happiness, my smiles
are fake.

Ashton: 7:51AM
i'm not saying that you
should fake it. i'm just
saying that you don't
really need some grand
gesture in order to be happy.
if even for a single moment,
there's got to be something
that makes you smile. think
of that, focus on that.

Luke: 7:52AM
That's kind of hard tbh.

Ashton: 7:54AM
and why is it so hard?
don't try too hard, just
focus on the one thing.
maybe a memory, or a
person, or, hell, a toy that
you loved when you were
a child.

Ashton: 7:55AM
sorry. that sounded really
insincere. i promise i'm
not one of those jackasses
that's all like, "oh, why
are you depressed? just
get over it. stop being so
sad and you'll magically
be cured." i just want you
to be happy.

Luke: 7:55AM
I'm trying... can we
FaceTime?

Ashton: 7:56AM
uh, yeah, i guess so.

Incoming Call: Hemmo💕

"Hey." Luke spoke first, breathing out a long sigh.

"Hi." Ashton said back awkwardly. He was sitting on the swing on his front porch, toes lightly grazing the wooden floor boards beneath him as he swang gently. "Sorry I look so bleh, I didn't have the effort to fix myself... That's why I didn't sound so excited about the FaceTime, but, like, I know you needed to talk and first and foremost you're my friend and-"

"Ash, you look amazing." Luke cut him off, his voice soft and sincere.

And it was true, Ashton hadn't had the energy to draw on his eyebrows or change out of the pajamas he'd slept in that now had a small coffee stain near the collar.

Ashton couldn't help but blush, his shockingly pale skin turning a rosey rose color. "N-No, I- I mean thank you, just no no, but... Thanks."

He couldn't believe how nice Like was being. He knew for sure that he looked like crap, but yet, Luke still contained that look in his eye as if he were mesmerized by the sight of him.

"What, uhm, what did you need to talk about? Is everything alright?" Ashton asked awkwardly, trying his best to steer the conversation away from his appearance.

"Just needed to see you." Luke replied bluntly, giving the older boy a small, one-sided smile.

Luke himself was already dressed for school, sitting on a stool at the kitchen counter. He had just finished his breakfast that was really just half a bowl of cereal, and he needed to see his newly made best friend.

Ashton adjusted the thin blanket on his lap, his hazel eyes staring directly into Luke's blue eyes through the tiny phone screen. "Why though?"

"Because, I- well..." and now Luke was the one that couldn't get his words out. "I don't mean to be to make you feel weird or anything, but, honestly, you're the thing that makes it so easy to smile and... Im beginning to think that you're the only person who can save me."

"Save you from what?"

"From myself."
