Ellen was asleep.

This was unusual for many reasons, the first being that she was one hundred percent a morning person. She was always awake before me, every single day without fail. Mornings were just a part of her- she loved them.

The second reason was that it was three-thirty in the afternoon. Usually she was up at seven, or earlier, but I hadn't seen her all day. When I had popped my head in to check on her, she was in the exact same position as before. Now, I was scared she was dead.

"Logan, go check on Ellen." I said worriedly as I drove the RV. We were almost out of Idaho, just a couple more miles to go.

"Why?" Logan asked. "I'm sure she's alright, just tired probably."

"Logan, now,"  I said with a tinge of irritation. He sighed, put down the juice box that he had been sucking on, and disappeared into the back bedroom.

Kate was sitting in the passenger seat, listening to music. I nudged her and she pulled an earbud out, looking at me with those big brown eyes that I had grown to admire.

"Have you talked to Ellen at all? Did she ever wake up?" I asked. I knew that Ellen wasn't exactly Kate's favorite person, but I figured that maybe they were on good terms after last night.

"No, I haven't," Kate replied with concern.

"Here she is," Logan called triumphantly, pulling a dazed-looking Ellen behind him. Her clothes were wrinkled, her hair was a mess, and she looked like she would rather be anywhere else.

I glanced at Kate in comparison. Kate's hair was perfectly styled, and she had the perfect amount of makeup to highlight her features without making it look fake. She looked like a model, while Ellen looked like something that had just come out of a cow's butthole.

"Why were you asleep so late, Ellen?" I asked. I got no response.

"Hey Kate, can you let Ellen sit in your seat for a little while?" I pleaded, still keeping my eyes focused on the road. It was a difficult multitask, but the road was pretty secluded so I didn't think I would hit anyone.

Kate got up from her seat and headed off toward the back somewhere. Ellen collapsed into the seat that was just vacated and almost immediately drifted off again.

"Ellen! Hey, Ellen!" I shook her a few times for good measure.

"What?" Ellen snapped, scowling.

"Why did you sleep for so long?" I inquired for what felt like the fiftieth time.

"I took pills," Ellen muttered. "Only a few."

I felt my fingers clench the steering wheel tighter. "You actually brought sleeping pills?"

"Yeah," Ellen confirmed. "I've had them for awhile now, usually I only take one per night...."

I rolled my eyes. "Just... go read a book or wash up or something. And stay awake."

I plugged my phone into the RV's stereo as Ellen trudged away. She was almost immediately replaced by Kate, which I wasn't complaining about.

"Ellen's been really bummed out lately," Kate mumbled as she opened a magazine. "It's kind of annoying, if I'm being honest."

I nodded in agreement. "I know, I was thinking the same thing," I replied. "But I'm sure she'll get over it. She always does."

Kate shrugged uncertainly and turned back to her magazine. I chose a song on my phone and it rumbled through my eardrums- Jamie had a pretty kickass sound system.
