Chapter 6- Trapped

Varian put my hands in chains.

"We have to leave. Now."
He said as he flew a kite out of the window with a scroll and a key connected to it.

"Why."
I ask angrily.

"The king's after a scroll I have.
He doesn't want Rapunzel to know about it.
I am going to gain her trust by making her get it and find the truth about the king lying to her."
Varian explains simply.

"Varian, please, there's still time to stop..."
I try again.

"NO! Now we have to go, or I'll have to make you come."
Varian hissed.

I sigh and follow Varian.
He is brilliant, but in grief.
When grief turns into vengeance, people can be dangerous.
I am forced to watch the person I love as he slowly losing his ways...

We hide in a cave outside the village. Nobody will hear me even if I'll shout.
Varian... what is happening to my sweet Varian...?

This wholesome kid that only tried to do good... the one I fell in love with...

Varian woke me up.
"Everyone's gone. Let's go back."

Varian dragged me back to the lab.
"I have to go now and meet with Rapunzel. I'll get the sun drop flower, free my father, and then we could go back to living our happy lives...

...after the kingdom of Corona pays, of course."
Varian muttered.

I started to give up. He is long gone... blinded from rage...

"And just in case you think of escaping..."
Varian said to me as he activated the ember near me.

"V-VARIAN! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!"
I try to crawl away, but the ember got my hand.

"Just don't move, Y/N.
I calculated everything.
I don't want to lose you too."
Varian said.

The ember stopped growing after it encased my left hand and foot.
Varian took the chains off me.

"I did this to protect you.
...
I'll be going, now."

I didn't answer him.
Varian sighed and left.

"This isn't him... This isn't him..."
I try to convince myself.

MY Varian would not take such extreme measures just to keep me here...
MY Varian wouldn't have planned to do such a complicated plan filled with lies and probably hurting the princess...
MY Varian would not want to hurt people or make them pay... even when he is desperate...

I know that he is still there... but...
I don't know how to get him back...

"I've got it, Y/N! I can save dad now!"
Varian exclaimed as he ran in with the legendary flower.

I didn't answer.
HOW did he get it? Through lying? Manipulation? Stealing?

Varian placed a giant drill next to Quirin's ember, putting the flower into it's systems.

The loud, annoying sound of drilling filled the room, but nothing happened.

"W-What...? Why isn't it working??"
Varian tried drilling into the ember, not succeeding.

Varian pushed the drill away in frustration, throwing everything off a table. I've never seen him like this...
"NO! IT'S USELESS!
It's like it no longer holds the sun drop's power!"

Varian came close to Quirin's ember, putting his head against it.
"I refuse to give up on you, dad."

Varian stood and looked at the floor, until he had an idea.

"The sun drop isn't the flower...
It's Rapunzel...!"
He said in realization.

"Nonono Varian, please!
I know what you are about to do but you MUST stop!
You can't just go after people like that! You can try asking for help, not endangering a kingdom!"
I try to struggle with the ember.
