We got to Edoras the next morning, "Edoras and the Golden Hall of Meduseld." Vithrendir announced, "There dwells Théoden, King of Rohan... whose mind is overthrown. Saruman's hold over King Theoden is now very strong. Be careful what you say. Do not look for welcome here."

We rode into Edoras, people stare at us in silence, their faces impassive.

"You'll find more cheer in a graveyard." Gimli muttered.

We walked up the steps to the Hall. Guards walked out of the Hall,

"I cannot allow you before Theoden King so armed, Gandalf Greyhame. By order of Grima Wormtongue." By the resignation in the captain's voice, I assumed he really didn't want to do this. But Vithrendir nodded at us, and we handed over our weapons. "Your staff."

"Hmmm? Oh, you would not part an old man from his walking stick."

The captain sighed, and then turned and lead us forward. Vithrendir winked slyly to Aragorn and I, and followed him, holding onto His arm. The rest of us followed behind him. The captain stopped at the door, and let us pass in.

I saw Wormtongue sitting next to the king.

"The courtesy of your hall is somewhat lessened of late...Theoden King." Vithrendir said.

As we walked forward, a group of menacing looking guards followed us.

"Why should I welcome you... Gandalf Stormcrow?" Theoden looked at Grima, who nodded.

"A just question, my liege. Late is the hour... in which this conjurer chooses to appear. Lathspell I name him. Ill news is an ill guest."

"Be silent." Vithrendir ordered, "Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth. I have not passed through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm." He lifted his staff in front of Grima's face.

"His staff. I told you to take the wizard's staff."

The menacing group moved to attack Vithrendir. We covered Vithrendir's back and started fighting them off. Vithrendir continued to walk towards Theoden.

"Theoden... son of Théngel... too long have you sat in the Shadows."

Grima sat up in an attempt to get away, but was stopped by Gimli standing on his chest with one foot. "I would stay still if I were you." Said dwarf threatened.

"Hearken to me! I release you... from the spell." Vithrendir held up his hand and closed his eyes, but Theoden laughed at him mockingly, and Vithrendir opened his eyes.

"You have no power here, Gandalf the Grey."

Vithrendir, angered, threw off his grey cloak. Theoden was thrown back by his bright white light.
