CHAPTER FIFTEEN: Save Your Tears

"It's never too late to be what you might have been."

____

Ruby Carson's focus locked onto her daughter first, having heard the gunshot from all the way inside her parked car. She was driven by instinct at that point, not even remembering if she closed the car door or what she said as she ran inside with only one thing on her mind.

Luna.

Her eyes seemed to instantly zero in on the blood pooled around her daughter, staining her hands and arms. As her eyes snapped up to assess Luna's face, she saw the absolute devastation etched on the girl's features.

Tears streamed down Luna's face, and the last time Ruby saw her daughter in such anguish was nine years ago when she received the call at work about a break-in and her husband being found dead at the scene.

And at that moment, all Ruby knew was that she had to get to her.

Without hesitation, she rushed forward, ready to walk right past the gun pointed in her direction if it wasn't for Melissa McCall tugging her back, a mix of fear and concern etched on her face.

Matt, the source of everyone's current nightmare, only laughed at the display. "Wow, now it's really a party. All the parents are here," he taunted, grinning down at Scott and Luna. "Well, all the ones that are still around, I guess."

"Mom," Luna couldn't help but sob, overwhelmed by just about everything. Her cry only added to the emotional tension that filled the room, a testament to the fear and helplessness that hung heavy in the air. "Why are you even here?" She gasped through breaths.

"I just sent a quick text telling her to pick you up from here." Matt suddenly produced Luna's phone from his jacket pocket, that same infuriating smirk playing on his lips again as he held it up. "You should really have a password on this thing. Never know who might try to get in and what they might be looking for." He threw the device to the ground, its already cracked screen shattering beyond repair.

"But you're a good girl. Nothing inappropriate to find." He smirked.

Luna's frustration and hatred for Matt surged to an all-time high. Before, she had tried to still be a little compassionate about everything. Focusing on the idea that nobody was born evil and that people are made to be the way they are through nurture or experience. But now, it was clear that even if that was the case, sympathy had no place for a murderer.

None of them had done anything to deserve any of this. It wasn't her fault, nor Scott's, Stiles', or even Derek's, that Matt had experienced some sort of drowning incident. And at a certain point, blaming the swim team seemed unjustifiable. What could they have possibly done to cause such deep-seated hatred within Matt?
