Chapter 8

Aryan dropped down from the sky, his wings moving down to his sides. He wore a zip up jacket over a black t-shirt and tight jeans. His hair was down and his glasses were on. He held out his hand for me to take.

I took a step back, staring at his hand.

"You can trust me, Julia. I'm not here to harm you."

"He is."

"Who?"

"Kellan."

His eyebrows rose. "You've seen him?"

I nodded.

He exhaled and took a step closer to me, filling the distance that was between us. He smelled of soap. "Come with me. There's something I need to show you."

I took a deep breath before taking his hand. "Where are we going?"

Wordlessly, he lifted me into his arms and extended his wings once more. He pumped them down so we were flying in the air. We rose above the trees and I could see everything.

There was a large house in the distance. It was white and gray and made of stone. The grass looked like golfing grass from far away.

"That's where I live."

"It's beautiful."

"This is only a dream. Wait until you see it in person."

I raised my eyebrows at him.

He turned and we went in the opposite direction, toward a large hospital. My hospital.

It was then that I realized how close we were to one another He had a thin layer of stubble on his chin and his lips were a dull red.

I swallowed hard and kept my eyes on the building ahead of us. "I see this place every day. Why are we here?"

He let his wings relax and we landed on the roof. There was a door in the center, probably leading to a stairwell. "There's something you need to see." He pulled his wings up against his back and if you didn't know he was an angel, you wouldn't know he even had wings.

I followed him into the stairwell and it was stuffy and hot. Sweat started building on my forehead and the back of my neck.

"Where is the doctor's office?"

"Which one?"

"Dr. Martin."

I swallowed and held onto the railing for support. "On the second floor."

He nodded once and started down the stairs, barely giving me time to keep up. He pulled open the door for the second floor and gestured for me to go in first.

I nodded to Dr. Martin's office, afraid to just open the door. I could get in serious trouble for going where I wasn't allowed.

He opened it and sitting inside was Kellan. He was facing Dr. Martin, unaware of our presence.

"He can't see you, Julia, He doesn't know we're here." Aryan said, standing beside me in the doorway.

I took a deep breath and walked into the room. I stood in front of the book case, wanting a view of both of them.

"Kellan, this is serious."

He sighed. "I didn't hurt her. I barely said anything to her."

"We're not trying to put any blame on you, Kellan. Please understand that. We just want to understand what happened."

"She was acting weird from the moment I met her. She said she knew me but... I don't know her."

"She said you've been in her room."

He rolled his eyes. "Do you seriously think that?"

"She hasn't been doing okay-"

"She's crazy-"

"Kellan, we don't use the term 'crazy.'"

He sighed.

"She's no different than you, you know."

"I'm not the one making shit up."

I took a step toward Kellan but Aryan grabbed my shoulders, holding me back. I stormed out of the room and headed for the stairs. I could hear him following me. "Why did you bring me here? I already know I'm crazy."

"You're not crazy, Julia. I wanted you to see this. This is happening  while you're asleep."

"Wait, this is real?"

He nodded.

"You know why he's here."

He nodded. "To kill you."
