Chapter 9

"Have you seen Kellan?" I asked Brayden, pulling the crust off my toast.

"Not since the other day when you freaked out."

I bit my lip, holding back what I really wanted to say. "I wanted to apologize to him."

"For being stupid."

I rolled my eyes. "Shut up."

He laughed. "I'm sorry but you were. You still are. That's why we're friends, right?"

"Why do I even put up with you?"

"What made you want to eat? I thought you didn't like the food here." He asked, taking a bit of his toast.

"I had a check up this morning. The doctor said I'm getting too thin so now they're making me eat."

"I didn't know they could do that."

I shrugged. "They can do whatever they want."

"Julia, Dr. Martin would like to see you." One of the nurses said, walking up behind Brayden.

I sighed and got to my feet. "Save me a spot in the community room."

He grinned at me. "Sure."

---

"Have a seat, Julia." Dr. Martin said, adjusting the blinds.

I sat down in one of the chairs, pulling my legs under me. "What's up?"

"How did you sleep last night?"

"Well my neck's a little stiff but it's not too bad."

He sat down in his chair and wrote something down. "Any dreams?"

I nodded. "Yeah, same as usual."

"Can you tell me about this one?"

"I was flying. I could see all the trees and the cars in the parking lot."

"Was there anyone else there with you?"

I shook my head. "It was just me."

"How did it end?"

"I fell."

"Did you land on anything? Did you get hurt?"

I shook my head. "I didn't land. I just... fell."

He nodded and wrote some things down in his notebook. "Alright. You can go now if you're done talking."

I raised my eyebrows. "That's it?"

He nodded. "I have all I need."

I started to stand up but paused and sat back down. "Did you say anything to Kellan about me?"

"I'm afraid that's confidential." He continued writing in his book, not looking up at me.

"If it was about me, then it's my business."

"I can't share information that I discussed with another patient. You know the rules, Julia."

I sighed. "Not even a yes or no?"

"We're done here, Julia." He met my gaze and held it, not giving in. Dr. Martin was in charge and he could do what he wanted. Which meant that if he wanted to talk about me with another patient, he could, with or without my consent.

---

"Julia. I know you're here."

I covered my mouth with my hands, wanting to make myself as quiet as possible.

"You can't hide from me. I know how to find you." Kellan said, his voice coming from my room. I could hear him moving things, trying to find me. There were little to no places to hide in my room. He had to know that. All our rooms were the same. "You're not fooling anyone, Julia. The doctors all think you're crazy. You might as well give up and come out."

I squeezed my eyes shut. When Brayden and I were younger, we would play hide-and-seek in the community room. If I closed my eyes, he was gone and he couldn't see me. I wanted that to work now.

The bathroom door opened and he scanned the room. He stormed over to the bathtub and threw the shower curtain back. An evil smile spread on his face. "Found you."

I screamed and kicked the blankets off me, struggling to catch my breath. My chest ached and my throat was tight.

I was dying. I had to be. There was no other explanation.

"Julia, it's okay. Breathe. Breathe."

I shook my head and covered my face with my hands, trying to curl into myself and hide. I was embarrassed, obviously, but still scared out of my mind. He was coming after me.

He really did want to kill me.

This chapter was really fun to write. I really liked the final dream here in this chapter as well. I hope you all liked it!
