Chapter 19

"I never told Kellan I was pregnant with you. I'm not sure how he even found out. I'd been staying in a small apartment in New York at the time. I had a job at a newspaper where I wrote an advice column. Kellan was sort of a... one-night stand. We didn't have much in common and I knew he had a reputation. A past he didn't want to own up to. He was the last person I wanted to have a child with. So when I knew I was pregnant, I quit my job and moved to Utah. I would have gone by myself but Aryan insisted that he stay with me."

"Wait-how do you know Aryan isn't my father?" I asked, looking between the two of them.

Lucy smiled and Aryan busted out laughing.

"I have never and will never have sex with Lucy." He said between gasps of air.

Lucy glared at him and smacked his arm. "Excuse me."

"You're like a sister to me. It'd be weird."

"Okay, when do I come in?" I asked.

Lucy cleared her throat. "A month or so after you were born, Kellan sent me a letter. He said he knew about you and was coming to see you. I knew I couldn't keep you safe with me. Not if Kellan had his way. So I sent you to the hospital.

"We didn't realize... When you started getting older, I noticed that you were smart. Smarter than I'd anticipated. You were smart and brave and... so strong. Everything I wanted you to be. You don't know how to use that to your advantage. Kellan was afraid you would hurt yourself or others without meaning to."

"Why?"

"He knows what he can do. He's afraid you'll turn out the same way."

"I'm nothing like him."

"He doesn't know that. I barely know that."

"Do you trust me?"

She took my hand and squeezed it. "Whole-heartedly."

I pulled my hand back and dropped my gaze.

"I know you're aware now but for years, I've been visiting you in your dreams. I wanted to see how you were doing. But you were so scared... I didn't want you to be afraid of me."

"Out of all of you guys, you scared me the least." I said.

Aryan got to his feet. "Please tell me I'm next and not Kellan."

I laughed. "Maybe."

He patted my knee before he headed for the door. "I'm going back to bed. Goodnight."

I grabbed my pillows and stuck them behind my head. "I don't know if I can sleep. What if Kellan's waiting for me to fall asleep again?"

"I'll stay with you. I can keep an eye on you if something happens." Brayden said, holding my gaze.

"Okay. Thanks."

"You're not sleeping in the same bed." Lucy said, getting to her feet.

"Oh, come on. It's not like we'll do anything." I said, rolling my eyes.

"I don't know how to do anything." Brayden said.

Lucy narrowed her eyes at him. "I would hope not. I paid good money for Julia to go to that hospital."

I laughed. "It was a waste. The staff weren't the greatest. I got out with no one but Kellan noticing. Not exactly secure if you ask me."

"That's behind us now."

Brayden pulled the blanket over his legs. "We'll behave, I promise."

Lucy crossed her arms over her chest. "I'm holding you to it."
