Chapter 11

Something was wrapped around my body, preventing me from moving, when I woke up. My head was stuffy and my vision was foggy. What the hell did they give me? Were they trying  to kill me?

I kicked my legs and rolled right off the bed. I pulled my blanket off me and sighed when it was the only thing holding me down. I stared up at the ceiling, bright lights blurred by the salt water filling my eyes.

Standing, I tossed the blanket onto the bed and glanced around the room. Amy was gone. She probably left for the night. Outside, it was dark but the sun was trying to come up.

I heard keys outside of the room and I quickly crawled under the bed, knowing they'd never check for me there. I held my breath, my heart beating fast in my chest.

"Julia? Julia, are you in the bathroom?" A female nurse asked. Her voice was deeper than Amy's but it didn't sound familiar. "I need help in room 241."

I got up and put my shoes on. Or my slippers, really. We didn't wear shoes.

I went to the door and was just about to peer through the slit when it started to open. I ducked behind it quickly and held my breath.

The first nurse along with a security guard entered the room. They glanced around with their hands on their hips. "I swear she was here just a few minutes ago. She was asleep."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes. We gave her medication to help her sleep. She shouldn't be awake this early."

I slid around to the other side of the door and pulled it shut. I locked it once it latched and took off running, ignoring the sounds of the two people yelling at me from the other side of the door.

I rounded a corner and saw two nurses headed in my direction. They were talking and had no idea I was even there unattended. I slid behind a stupid Christmas tree in the corner of the hallway and waited for them to pass by. The lights were glued to the limbs and the ornaments were all made of foam. It was supposed to be hospital-proof but it was a cheap excuse for a tree at all.

The nurses passed by slowly, one nurse using her hands to explain something. Ignoring their conversation, I reached out and grabbed a set of keys. I tightened my grip on them so they wouldn't jingle before pulling them to my chest. I only had so long before they noticed the keys were gone and I was gone and put two and two together. I had to work fast.

I took off down the hallway and slowed once I hit room 212. I was close. I could see the door.

211.

210.

209.

I glanced down both sides of the hallway before I pulled the master key and tried the lock. The door opened and I took a deep breath before entering the room.
