Chapter 15

I walked down the last step and my eyebrows rose. The basement held three cells, all separated by a cement wall. The bars were thick, making any kind of escape impossible. The rest of the room was empty but it was big enough to store plenty more.

"You think this will be enough to keep Kellan from killing me?" I asked, crossing my arms over my chest

"We can keep you safe, Julia. The cell can only be opened by a key, which I keep locked up." Lucy said, sitting on the steps.

"You are not locking me up."

Aryan rolled his eyes, a smile on his face. "You're safe in this house. There's two of us against him."

"He almost killed me. Twice."

"Twice?" Lucy asked, surprised.

"The first time was in one of my dreams. He didn't attack me or anything but I knew he was going to kill me. The second time was up on the roof. When you were going after Lucy and Brayden."

"How long was he up there?" Aryan asked.

"Only a few minutes." I sat down beside Lucy on the steps. "He had a knife with him. He said 'you look just like her' before he flew off."

Lucy and Aryan exchanged nervous glances.

"What?"

Lucy sighed. "There's something we need to talk to you about."

"Ok. What is it?"

"I'm your mother."

I stared at her, not sure she said what I heard. Or thought I heard. "You... But you're like... 19."

"I'm 700 years old, Julia."

"How can you be my mother? How... how can you be 700 years old?" I said, my voice starting to shake. I stood up and grabbed the railing for support.

Lucy stood up too. "Angels are immortal. Time is... suspended. Well, physically it is. We keep aging until we die."

"Immortal means you don't die."

"I thought it'd be better than to say 'killed.'"

I sighed and started up the steps. I needed to move. This was nuts. It was insane.

No, I was insane. I was imagining this.

Right?

"Julia, I know this is a lot for you to take in but you have to listen to me. You need to know."

I turned around and stared at her with tear-filled eyes. "I need to know? What? That my own mother gave me up so I could spend my life in a mental hospital? That I thought I was crazy for years? That I let them convince me I was crazy? I don't want to hear it."

I stormed off and ran through the mansion. I barely knew the place but I knew I needed to be alone. I needed time to think.

Think of how my own mother abandoned me?

No, I... I needed to stop thinking.

"Julia, woah. Where are you going in such a hurry?" Brayden said, grabbing my shoulders to stop me. When he saw I was crying, he pulled me close and hugged me. "Hey, don't cry. You cry too much. Time we got you to smile."

"It's a lost cause." I mumbled.

He wrapped an arm around my shoulders. "Not completely. I know just what will perk you up."
