CHAPTER 9: OUT OF THE WOODS

“Mendez! We need a little help here if you don’t mind!” Chase yelled urgently.

My mind wasn’t working right. There’s a big possibility that I lost the capability to think clearly. I had to do something. My heart was pounding, threatening to jump out in any second now. I approached them carefully, terrified that the slippery land might give me the same fate. Or worse, give him the same fate.

If something bad happened to Chase I would kill Catherine using my own hands. Well, if she was still alive by then.

I bent down beside him and reluctantly clutched Catherine’s hand. She was screaming, telling me that she would never forgive me if I let her fall. Wow. Unbelievable. With all the strength I could muster, I pulled her up. He did the same and with great effort, we started moving backwards. This girl was pretty heavy.

“Hold that vine Cat,” I shouted, tilting my head to the side. She was halfway up so I grabbed her hair and tugged forcefully. She cried in excruciating pain, sinking her claws onto my wrist. I bit my lower lip to stop myself from crying in anguish. Chase hauled her waist and we all fell back on the wet and smelly ground, our clothes covered in mud.

We lay on the dirty land, chests rising and falling. I heard them gasping for air. The rescue mission took all of our energies. A part of me wanted to blame Catherine for this but I felt so light and weirdly satisfied. I had never done something like this before. I could feel my blood pumping through my veins.

Adrenaline was like a drug. It could change a person and make him feel so alive. I sat up and smiled at them. Then my simple smile turned into a hysterical laugh that made me look like a crazy person who must be locked up in an asylum. The two of them stared at me with concern faces.

Chase touched my lip and I moved away immediately, still laughing.

“Your lips are bleeding,” he said. I unconsciously stroked it and saw blood on my fingers. Something caught his attention. He took my hand and checked out my wrist. It was bleeding too thanks to grateful Catherine. Her long and sharp nails left gashes on my skin.

“Are you alright?” he asked. I blinked at him then giggled louder. The question was hilarious coming from his mouth. I had been waiting pathetically all day for him to ask me that question. He’s asking that now? He was kidding right? I didn’t want his pity. I shoved him hard and stood up, my socks soaked in mud. I was already walking away from them when I remembered something. I turned around, my gaze fell on Catherine.

“You’re welcome.”

She was taken aback. Her ego was so huge she couldn’t even say thank you. It was even larger than her brain if she had any. I doubt that.

They followed me quietly, unsure of where I was heading. I had no idea where I was going too. I was so exhausted I couldn’t feel my legs anymore.

“Sacred, okay I’ll say it. Thank y—”

“Save it,” I blurted out, interrupting Catherine’s insincere words. I didn’t do it for her and she knew it. Maybe I should’ve listened to Rielle. I shouldn’t be here with them.

“Mendez,” Chase called and I ignored him.

“Mendez, please,” he called again.

“I don’t want to talk right now Chase. You can throw your insults at me tomorrow. I can’t afford another fight tonight,” I told him, almost pleading.

“What? I’m not picking up a fight. Wait,” he begged.

“Then what do you want?” I asked, exasperated. He held my hand, stopping me from walking any farther. I got confused when he crouched down, his back to me. “What are you doi—”
