CHAPTER 22: A DEAD END (Part 2)
Chase kept looking at me.
I was pretending that I was fascinated by the figures written at the board, staring at my teacher's poor penmanship without actually understanding a single word. I wasn't even aware what the subject was. And by the looks of the rest of the class, it was clear that we're all on the same page.
I hadn't talked to Chase since I stayed at his house. It seemed like ages ago and now I regretted hiding from him yesterday because I wasn't allowed to talk to him anymore. Dylan wanted me to avoid him. Actually, he was forcing me to avoid him. I knew that Chase would hate me for this but it's better than him hating me because Serene and I treated him like a toy we could share. Remembering that absurd stunt was sickening and revolting. I was disappointed with myself for letting that happen. Dylan was using my past mistakes to control me and I didn't have a choice.
If I could go back in time I would never try to do anything that could hurt Chase.
The bell rang and I rushed to the door even before our teacher dismissed the class. I needed to run away from Chase. It's better this way. I couldn't face him. Not after everything that I had done.
When I stepped outside I heard footsteps behind me and I didn't need to be a rocket scientist to know whose steps they belong. So I ran faster which was not a really good idea because I ran slower than my grandma.
She ran like a dying turtle.
The sea of students in the hallway made it harder for me to get away. I kept bumping into random people. It's like going against the current. The moment I turned the corner, I was suddenly pushed aggressively, my back hitting the cold wall. A pair of angry eyes greeted me and I gasped. I opened my mouth to speak but decided against it.
"I'm sick of your games!" Chase yelled.
"What are you talking about?" I said in a perfectly calm voice which was pretty much surprising for me.
"You're playing dumb right now? Seriously?" he asked in a mocking tone. "First you left my house without even saying anything. Then you hid from me yesterday like a five year old playing hide and seek. You cut classes. You're not answering my calls. You're not even talking to me! What is going on?"
"Nothing. Excuse me," I said before freeing myself from his tight grip. I tried to walk away but he pulled my hand and turned me to him.
"What. Is. Going. On?" he asked furiously.
I struggled to keep my emotions at bay, maintaining a poker face. "Mind your own business. Let me go."
Hurt was unmistakable on his face and it broke what's left of me. I wanted to touch him and explain but I couldn't do it. He mustn't learn the truth.
"Did I do something wrong? Are you mad at me?" he asked in a low voice, almost a whisper.
I swallowed hard. This was worse than I thought. But I had to remind myself that this was for the best. I must keep him in the dark. "Don't follow me. I don't want to talk to you."
With that, I walked away.
"Sacred, wait," he asked. "What's wrong?"
I continued walking.
