I'm sorry for not making this clear for you guys. I clearly have a lot of homework and it's messing with my brain but I'll try to explain it now.
At the beginning Birdie said that she was taken away from her mom when she was three years old BECAUSE she didn't want Caitlin to find out how things really played out. If Caitlin, (when she found out Birdie was her kid) thought that she was taken away, it would've been less hurtful than knowing she practically abandoned her daughter because of Barry's disappearance.
We all know Caitlin is a precious bean who would never hurt a fly. But her alter ego would. It was all KF doing but since they're basically the same person she'll feel horrible knowing her kid was given up for adoption by herself even if it was KF because at this point she can control her powers and be conscious of what her alter ego is doing.
Birdie just doesn't want Caitlin to blame herself and get hurt by this. She knows her mom too well, just by the time she has spent with her. Plus, she's scared she'll shut her out because she feels guilty.
