The smile on Grandpa's face fell the moment he saw the scratches and discoloration on my face and arms. He hugged me gently as his hand lovingly held the back of my neck.

For the first time in my entire life, I didn't have the urge to hug him back. Tears began to brim on my eyes as my body felt numb.

"When the dean called me, I booked a flight right away. Mabuti at nasa Manila lang ako." Grandpa took a step back as his eyes examined the scratches and red marks up my face. I couldn't dare to look at him in the eyes.

"Let's go the hospital and then to the station. They're going to pay for what they've done to you." Grandpa spoke softly but with full conviction. He sounded calm but I knew he was fuming.

Umiling agad ako at nagbaba ng tingin sa sahig. "No need, Gramps. I put up a good fight."

My voice came out blank and emotionless.

Grandpa sighed and placed his arm around my shoulder. "Let's go home. I knew your Mother isn't capable of taking care of you."

My hands clenched to a fist but yet I couldn't say or do anything.

As Grandpa and I were in the backseat of his car, all I did was peer out the window and stare at the dark silent streets of Filimon Heights. My heart felt like it was on a lockdown from all the confusion and the pain.

"Reika..." Grandpa spoke from beside me but I can't even dare to look at him. "What was the fight about? Who started it?"

I swallowed before talking, my eyes remained at the window. "I don't know. I saw my friends getting hurt. I had to help."

He chuckled at patted my head lightly. "You really are a Magno. The lengths you'll go through just to protect the people you love."

I closed my eyes shut at the word he uttered. Protect.

"Reika, is something bothering you?" Grandpa spoke again, making me open my eyes.

I took a deep breath as my eyes shifted to the floor. My hands began to tremble so I clutched my knees. I could see the shadow of my veins protruding on my knuckles.

"Reika, you can always tell me," he said.

"I patched up my relationship with Dad. I even lived with him and I'd like to continue living under his roof." I confessed what has bug me for so many months.

My heartbeat grew slow as I waited for his response. My eyes remained fixed on the floor.

For a few moments he was silent. Until he finally spoke, "I know...and I'm disappointed it took you such a long time to tell me the truth." He heaved a deep sigh and from my periphery, I saw him look up.
