Imagine : you try to leave a charity event early

You couldn't help the way you felt. The way he made you feel. He was your Captain; you knew that it was wrong.

But still. The night air was cool and harsh against your bare, exposed arms whilst you stood out on the balcony, nowhere near thinking about rejoining the party inside. You shivered slightly as a gust of wind bit at you unexpectedly. The chill was halted a moment later when a dinner jacket was placed over your shoulders.

You turned. It was him; who else would have noticed that you'd snuck out of the crowded ballroom.

His bright blue eyes met yours as he ran a hand through his hair. "Not in the party mood tonight?"

"Just don't feel like being paraded about," you shrugged and sighed. "You know?"

"Yep, I got it all the time back before I hit the ice." He held your gaze. "It might seem rubbish but just remember that the government doesn't have to let us do what we do. They need reassurance that we aren't feral savages who are causing destruction needlessly."

"Well, we're completely tame if you include Banner rather than the Hulk." You giggled and he smiled.

The two of you stared into each other's eyes, hovering closer and closer. You parted your lips slightly, hoping that he might see it as a silent and subtle invitation to move even further. He seemed to read your mind - like he always did.

You stumbled together and he placed a hand on either side of your waist, coming towards you until your forehead was resting on his as you looked up at him. He placed a soft, gentle kiss on your lips. "I've been meaning to do that for a while now."

"Same," you replied, breathless despite the fact that it was only a small amount of contact. "I just never figured that you'd feel the same way."

"Well, how about we go back inside now, smile and shake hands with the masses tonight, then in the morning, we can talk about this. Us."

You smiled contentedly as he released you from his embrace and turned towards the door. "Deal".

"After you then, m'lady." He grinned and stooped into a mock bow before reaching past you for the door. He pushed the sliding glass panel back and the uproar of chatter and music you'd been protected from, hit you all at once in an overpowering wave. His hand moved to the small of your back as he guided you inside - back into the throws of the party.

However, this time, you could bear all the noise. Because you knew that, in the morning, the two of you would be alone to talk and, for a few precious hours as the others in the compound slept, it would be like you were the only two people in the world. Like it was meant to be.
