You woke up with a start.

It took you a minute to work out where you were but once you'd remembered that you'd stayed at Matt's apartment, you calmed down considerably. It was still dark outside but you'd slept for a couple hours so you deduced that it was early in the morning. The lack of harsh LED light illuminating your surroundings meant that you were sleeping in Matt's bed as usual. A small frown crossed your lips at the thought that Matt was spending the night on the slightly uncomfortable sofa when the light didn't really bother you.

The frown suddenly vanished when you felt the bed shift next to you.

A grin replaced it as you lifted your head slightly off of the pillow. In the low light, you could just make out the outline of Matt as he peacefully dozed with his back facing you.

You let your head fall back down to the pillow and fell back asleep within minutes, knowing that he was there to keep you safe.

When you awoke again in the morning, Matt was no longer lying beside you. The covers on his side had been thrown off carelessly and the mattress was still warm which told you that he'd just gotten up. Without standing up, you shuffled towards the end of the bed and leaned off of the edge, looking out into the sitting room and kitchen. Sure enough, he was standing at the counter wearing a black zip-up hoodie, making coffee whilst humming a happy tune.

You smiled and leaned further out to watch but scrambled back into place when you saw him coming back towards the bed with two cups of coffee.

"Morning," you said sweetly.

He smiled widely and sat on the end of the bed, minding that he didn't sit on your legs. "Ah, you're awake. I hope you didn't mind last night. You fell asleep on the sofa so I put you to bed, you asked me not to leave you and I was just so tired that I didn't want to go..."

You cut him off before he could say anything else. "Matt, don't. It was lovely - it was nice to share the bed with you for once rather than you feeling like you have to slope off to the couch. I wouldn't mind doing it again, even".

He was still smiling. "How about you stay tonight, then?"

"Fine by me. It's the weekend so I don't have work and we could swing by my place later to grab some fresh clothes if you don't mind".

Carefully, he handed you one of the coffee cups, only letting go when he was sure that you had it with both hands. "Then we have a date. Do you need to borrow anything for today?"

You sipped the coffee as you sat up in bed. Gently, you reached over to him and ran your hand along his forearm, stopping when you reached his empty hand and holding it with yours. "Just a shirt - I'll wear my jeans from yesterday. But I do have one request... could you come back to bed for a bit after you've had that coffee?"

"Sure, if it's what you want". He started to drink quicker, making you smile to yourself. "Anyway, how's your head?"

"It's all good". Your hand raised to the neat row of stitches above your right eyebrow. For a blind man, he was rather talented with a needle and thread. It was probably a talent that he'd picked up before he'd met you and got to know you well enough that he allowed you to take over the job of his nurse.

You watched as he took your empty mug and walked into the kitchen before returning moments later empty-handed. He grinned at you as he slipped back under the covers beside you. "Can I ask you a question?"

"Sure," you replied, snuggling in against his back.

"What did you need me for last night?"

You cleared your throat. "I just wanted to talk to you. You went AWOL for days even though you promised me that you never would and I guess I just panicked". The next part was hard for you to even think about, let alone admit. "I don't know what I would do if you weren't here. Like, if something really bad went wrong on a mission and you..."

You couldn't even bring yourself to finish.

Matt turned and held you in a tight embrace, unable to see you but understanding the situation from your rapid heartbeat. He pressed a kiss against your jawbone then your collarbone and nuzzled into your neck. "Shhh, it's alright. You'll never lose me. I'll be here until we're both old and grey."

"Together?"

"Together."
