"You're looking really good Mason. I'm very impressed with your progress." Doctor Karr took a step back from where she was feeling my right shoulder. Another week of rest and waiting is finally paying off.

It's been a few weeks now since the surgery and every day I feel myself getting stronger and stronger. My arm becomes less of a worry as the pain subsides. I can see the finish line but it's still unfortunately unattainable.

At least for a while.

"I'd say by our next visit we can take off that sling and set you up with a physical therapist to get you to minimal movement. It's still a long road ahead but you're done a good job so far with keeping it steady and allowing it to heal. All of which leads to throwing sooner." She smiles while getting her things together.

"Thank you. I can't wait for the next appointment." Just the thought of being able to remove the sling for more than just the appointments has my head spinning. I can't fucking wait to be rid of it.

Checking out afterward is a blur and I immediately call Darius to give him the news. He's been busy with playoffs, and the team progressing even further.

They've just secured the AFC east championship title and are on their way to securing the entire AFC. The team is solid and no matter how hard it is to admit it, they're doing just fine without me.

Dr. Callahan called me yesterday, the team's specialty doctor, to catch up on my prognosis and how I was doing. He sounded just as pleased with my progress as Dr. Karr and says he hopes to see me back in Boston soon.

Theoretically, once the sling is off plus another week of healing, I could go back up to my apartment in Boston. Considering I've done all my initial recovery and the team will want to work out my physical therapy, there would be no real reason to stay here for the rest of it.

At least not one I've come to accept yet.

When I got home it was just Marie who I hear bustling around, assuming Dad was still upstairs working. He rarely leaves his office during the day and his car was in the driveway telling me he is still there.

I shower and change into something comfortable before heading downstairs for another mind numbing dinner with decent food and lack of conversation.

When I get down there I'm surprised to see just Marie sitting at the dining room table, a room vacant beside her. I can tell immediately something is off.

She wipes her cheeks and looks up at me with tears in her eyes.

"What's wrong, what's happened?" I step into the room, feeling suffocated with worry. I rarely see her cry, which makes me nervous as is.

She smiles sadly at me, wiping her eyes with a tissue.

"Nothing Mason, don't worry about me. Your dad and I just had a small argument is all. I'll get started on dinner." She stands, looking like she's about to break.

"What the fuck did he say to you." I clench my fist and look her in the eye. "Did he hurt you?" Just the thought makes me sick to my stomach but I've seen my dad angry and although he's never laid a hand on me, I wouldn't put it past him.

"Oh god no, no no Mason." She shuffles over to me. "It's nothing, we just had a little disagreement. You sit down and I'll get things ready." Before I can pry her for more information she leaves, sniffling in the process.

Absolutely not. My pathetic excuse for a father can shit on me all he wants, but not Marie. Marie and I may not have the best relationship but she was a sweetheart, always looking out for me even when I'm unapproachable.
