gotta watch you now --

you take your glass and in the swirling light

spiral eyes take a glance

and i

half-smile. both taking words like daggers;

how could i say anything at all.

                     "do you know how that makes me feel?"

(and Monkey and Charlotte

lived with each other's corpses

until the day they died)

Do you always drag your body about like that?

Does she follow you deep into your sleep?

pills, tablets, unread leaflets, the bottle cap and hiss of sparkling tongues,

and dad says, "let it be"

but i've lost all my poetry, i say

and no words could ever undo

though i'm watching you now --

seeing all the lights fading

in your wine glow grin.
