Everything was still a bit confused and my senses were numb; my vision couldn’t focus in a thing; I knew I’d feel like that for a while and I knew why: sedatives. That wasn’t a surprise to me at all. I just waited until I could feel my body again and I sighed before sitting on bed and seeking for anyone around with my eyes. While I was completely alone, I ran my hand through the back part of my head and I felt the few stitches that still hurt a bit; it was sensitive.

A moan came out of my mouth silently, and I squeezed my eyes shut, trying not to think too much ‘cause even that hurt. Soon I felt a hand on my shoulder and I smiled, feeling that well-known touch on my skin.

“So Mrs. Kirsten is awake. How you feeling?” she said while checking the medical records and writing something on the paper.

“I’ll be fine, thanks Lana.” Though I hadn’t answered her actual question, I didn’t have to; and she didn’t insist on making me feel better by now ‘cause she already knew me pretty well to try such a thing.

Lana was a sweet and friendly woman around her fifties who worked at the local hospital even before I was born. She’d always been a nurse there and people used to like her; even I, who wasn’t someone really friendly after all. The first time we met was about six years ago and she had a really hard time trying to help such a difficult girl. Since then, she learnt how to deal with me, even not being the easiest task. I trusted her and I also got on really well with her only daughter, Evangeline – mostly called Angel –, a sweet nine-year-old girl who always seemed happy and cheered everyone up no matter what.

While she was still focused on the papers between her hands I stood up and tried to stand still, successfully this time. I bent down and sat on the floor to grab my shoes. Fumbling with the laces, I watched with the corner of my eyes as Lana walked to me and patted my back softly. By her touch I knew she was worried; again. But she wouldn’t dare to say it out loud; she never did.

“Take care,” was all she said, and that was when I lifted my head to meet her gaze. “And you’ll need to take one of these once a day,” she showed me the little pot of tablets, smiling warmly at me “To ease the pain, you know.”

“Thanks.” I said grabbing the pot and putting it into the pocket on my jacket. “Promise I’ll take it.” She kept looking at me for a while, until she nodded and slightly smiled.

“Hey, Kirsten. Next Sunday’s Angel’s birthday, we’re gonna have a cake at home around 7pm. Wanna come?” her eyes sparkled with hope and I knew she really wanted me there; though I wasn’t sure if Tyler would agree to come with me. He loved kids, but he really wasn’t fond of much people around him, around us

“I’ll do my best to be there. Tell Angel to wait for me. Now I really gotta go, thanks Lana.” She just nodded once more before I left rushing my steps outside the door. The clock on the wall indicated that it was already fifteen past midnight and my heart jumped on my chest; how long had I been there? According to what I remembered, about 3 hours or so. The last time I checked the hours on my phone it was 9pm and Tyler and I were still at the mall.

While I walked to the door that would lead me outside, a few known faces smiled and nodded at me and I just smiled forcedly back at them, trying to be as fast as I could. Soon the dark night was above me and I felt the cold air hit my skin, making me shiver.
