The worst part of having stupid friends is that they can’t stop being stupid, even when it gets annoying as hell. I was tired and sleepy, and they just couldn’t turn off the damn radio while singing really loudly some song that seemed to be created especially with the purpose of annoying you, and later, getting stuck in your head. See? That’s the problem with studying music; you suddenly start hating songs with no meaning, and your friends start saying you have the musical taste of an 80-year-old.

Not that I cared about that, ‘cause I didn’t, but they actually put those songs on just to annoy me, and I usually didn’t care about their childish behavior, but it was late at night, the streets were empty and the only thing we could hear echoing in every corner was that song, and, yes, I felt embarrassed about that, since basically everyone in town knew me.

When I finally parked in front of Mark’s house, it felt like if a huge weight was being pulled off my back. David was a kid, yes, but Mark was even worse; he was the reason why we found ourselves in trouble a lot of times. Still, he was as scared as a ten year-old, and I couldn’t avoid laughing at what he asked me when he was about to leave the car.

“Hey, Haz, can you follow me to the door? I bet my mum is awake waiting for me and she’ll want to know why I took so long.”

As I said before, I busted out laughing. Was he being serious?

“What am I? Your good uncle who lies to your parents to not put you in trouble? Man, you’re twenty years old!”

“C’mon, you’re the best friend every parent wants your son to have. I need an excuse for getting home this late, and I don’t think saying I was with the police is a good idea.” He laughed but I saw in his eyes he was really worried about it, which make me laugh even more.

“If you were at uni or at least worked to have your own place, it wouldn’t be a problem, you know. Besides, you wouldn’t have to use mine to your freaky parties.”

“See? That’s what I’m talking about. You’re the friend that does all that stuff. That’s why my parents love you. That’s why I love you.”

“Oh well thanks, I appreciate that, but as you well know, I’m not available for serious relationships right now.” I winked and Mark laughed.

“Yeah, yeah, I know. You’re already promised to Charlie. Got it. No need to break my heart.” His joke wasn’t really funny, and he knew that. My knuckles tightened around the steering wheel and I got serious, which made Mark swallow hard and quickly change subject; he knew he’d crossed the line. Even Davie on the backseat got tense, and sometimes it scared me how easily I could make my friends shut up. “So, uhn… You’re coming with me?”

“Sure.” I said before opening the door and walking around the car, following Mark ‘till his front door. I waited until he turned the keys on the lock and as soon as he pushed it open, we heard his mom walking from the kitchen. Soon she was in front of us, smiling warmly at me while pulling her son closer to her by his shoulders. Her first comment was a mom-typical one.

“It’s cold out here, shouldn’t you be wearing something warmer?”

I smiled at her and nodded.

“I tried to make Mark put something decent, but he’s a stubborn, you know.” He looked at me as if I’d said the most embarrassing thing I could’ve probably said, and my smile grew wider; so did Mrs. Nichols’.
