Scarlett was lying on her stomach with her arms serving as pillows when Lana came back from the bathroom, her eyes red and swollen with happy tears and a wobbly smile plastered to her face. I couldn’t quite understand why the whole situation made her so emotional, but I wasn’t about to argue with someone who’d lived with Scarlett for years straight, having to handle her temper and mood changes without getting to know the real reason.

I was happy Scarlett had told her, though. Lana more than anyone deserved to understand her. She’d been the one to help her thousands of times when Scar was about to breakdown, and at the very least, I felt happy to know she’d had Lana before she even had me.

That woman and her daughter were certainly sent from heaven into such a girl’s troubled life.

A second later, Lana fell down on the empty couch, sighing heavily and closing her eyes. The excess of work was showing on her features, dark bags placed underneath her eyes and wrinkles here and there that wouldn’t be visible if she was relaxed.

“Where’s Angel?” I asked instead of going into the subject ‘work’, because that was certainly something not pleasant to talk about.

“At school,” she said simply, smiling weakly at the ceiling, then opening her eyes to look at me with something that looked like gratitude for even thinking about her daughter. I suppose. Right after, she turned and stared at Scarlett on the floor, until the girl met her glance. “Scarlett, love, would you mind leaving me alone with Harry for a moment?”

I arched an eyebrow at Scar, who just shrugged, managing to stand up quickly.

“Oh, no,” she growled, rolling her eyes “The talk. Lana, please, don’t make him too uncomfortable, yeah? Think we’re grown enough for that,” I could tell the tone of her voice was pure mockery, and yet, it was fond, because she probably knew that whatever Lana had to tell me, it was because she cared.

“Go away, Scarlett,” Lana breathed out, straightening herself on the other couch and I did just the same, sitting instead of lying.

“Fine, I’ll just clean the kitchen then,” Scar stated as if it was a torture, glaring at me before disappearing into the kitchen and muttering a “This is the last time I offer to clean a room by myself, curly, don’t get used to it.”

Lana giggled and waited until Scarlett had completely disappeared from our views (which was quite complicated considering there was not exactly a division between the living room and the kitchen, but) before sighing audibly and looking at me with that same fond look she’d always used.

“Serious stuff coming?” I asked, shooting her a grin that I hoped didn’t look as nervous as I felt. Somehow, this was Scarlett’s family, and even though I probably already had her approval, it was impossible not to be nervous when the circumstances we were in were completely different others.

Lana nodded, still smiling, and moved to the other edge of the couch as I did the same. Like that, we were kind of side by side.

“I know I’ve talked to you about this already,” she started, patting my thigh “but I really need you to know I’m immensely glad she found you. You must have fallen from heaven, Harry. I’ve never seen such an amazing boy.”
