12th Chapter

When Sehun came home late in the evening, Hyerin knew their date didn’t end well. Her brother looked like he came from a funeral. She was dying to ask what happened but their father suddenly came out of his study room. Her Dad was usually a very cheerful person but his face was anything but happy right now. She noticed that Sehun stopped on his tracks as he saw their father and she could sense an unspoken bitterness beneath him. Did something happen between the two?

“I have been waiting for you to come home, Sehun. Let’s talk in my office.” Her father said in an authoritative tone.

Sehun’s face became blank and followed their father to the study room. She was really worried and curious on what they’re going to talk about so she tiptoed to eavesdrop on their conversation. But even before she could press her ear to the door, someone stopped her by the arm.

“Mom.” Hyerin was surprised to see her mom holding her arm.

“You shouldn’t eavesdrop, Hyerin.” Her mom scolded her in a gentle tone.

“But, Mom.. I don’t like the look on Dad’s and Sehun’s faces. What are they going to talk about? Is Sehun in trouble? What happened?”

Her mom’s expression became sullen before sighing. She looked into her daughter’s eyes. “Did you know about Sehun’s feelings for Eun Mi?”

Hyerin was taken aback by the question. She had always known about both of their feelings for each other and she was the one who always pushed them to be together. Putting all these things together and the current situation, she had more or less of an idea of what was going on. She kind of expected this thing to happen but she had always hoped that somehow their family would permit it.

“Yes.” She admitted. “So, is it about this?” Her mom nodded. “But Mom, Eun Mi-yah and Sehunnie aren’t blood-related. They can be together, right?”

“Hyerin, Sehun has been formally adopted by our family since he was born. Our clan is respected by a lot of people, not only here is Seoul, but the whole business world. And Eun Mi being the sole successor of the prime family, she is the one being kept an eye on the most. The society we’re living in most probably won’t be able to accept it if the two would start to be in a relationship. It’s also not well-known that Sehun is adopted.”

The more she listened to her mom’s explanation, the more she became sad for her brother and Eun Mi. Why couldn’t they just be happy together? Seriously, principles of the society and family reputation issues were just so freaking ridiculous.

“Then, what about their happiness, Mom?” She just asked.

“They’re still young. You are, too. Maybe it’s just infatuation between them.  Let’s just hope that everything would go well.”

Hyerin waited in her room for Sehun and her dad to finish talking. She kept her door open so she could see if her brother would come back to his room. After a few minutes, she saw him looking tired than he ever had been before. She was a little hesitant to approach at first, but then she wanted to be of some help.
