Heavy breaths filled the air, as your chest heaved, tears pushed at your lids. They were desperate to fall but as you didn't blink, they stayed steady. Steve looked at you, tears in his own eyes, mouth drawn into a tight line. He took a few deep breaths, reigning his considerable Navy SEAL training. His face cleared of anger and drew into the look you hated, he looked at you with no emotion. "She's my mother. I have to go." His voice was steady, you drew in a shaky breath. "I'm not saying don't go, I'm saying be safe, I want you to come home, I want you to come home to me." Steve took in a heavy breath, "I will always come home to you, but I have to do this." You nodded, "Are you at least taking Danny with you?" He shook his head, "No, I need to do this alone." You opened your mouth to say something but closed it without saying a word, your arms rested inside each other, crossed but not at the same time, in front of you. Holding yourself tightly, you bit your lower lip, tears well up and you looked down, nodding.

You looked back up at sound of his boots clipping along the hard wood floors. He was standing by the door, you walked over and kissed his cheek. He placed an arm around your waist pulling you into a one-armed hug. Steve left and the door swung shut behind him. Walking to the window, you kissed your fingers and pressed them to the cool glass, waving to your husband trying to keep a smile on your face, like you knew you'd see him again. You collapsed on the couch when the car was out of sight, the tears that had been forced down, now falling freely.

Steve leaned back, using his Navy training to bring his breathing back under control. He usually never left for a case or for anything else with you mad at him. Inhaling a steady breath, the plane ride seemed longer than he thought it would be. When he landed, he didn't check his phone not even to send you a cursory 'I've landed' text. He picked up his bag and swung it over his shoulder as he headed out into the heat. Walking brusquely, he headed towards the meeting point. Steve manged to meet up with his mother. All his feelings of abandonment came flooding to the surface, when he saw her again. While he understood that she had to do what she had done, the angry teenager in him was still hurt from her decision.

To say it had been difficult was an understatement, it had been eight weeks. Eight weeks of stewing guilt for the both of you. You were twitchy with the lack of news on Steve's part. He had found it difficult to contact you, to rehash the argument you had had shortly before him leaving. He found out that his mother wanted out of the life she had made, the life that had turned on her. Steve had run into Junior in Sinaloa, he followed Steve in finding his mother and convincing her to accept his help. When they had caught up with Doris, she admitted that she was using this for a payday, and that she wanted out of her CIA life. The talks had diminished massively. Doris McGarrett had shot the person who tried to kill him before it all went to hell.

Lucia, the woman Doris had been chasing, suddenly snapped shot Steve. Before grabbing Doris and holding her hostage. Lucia was shrieking at Steve, to drop his weapons. Steve relinquished his weapons hoping to free his mother, he also admitted that he was Doris' son. He pleaded with Lucia to let his mother go. She produced a knife from somewhere on her person and thrust it into Doris' side. Her haunted eyes caught Steve's as Junior shot Lucia. Killing her. Steve crawled forward and clutched at his mother's body as the life slipped away from her. Steve's SEAL team came in fast, co-ordinated, they took Lucia's and Doris' bodies. Steve was patched up.

Soon Junior and Steve were back on the plane home. Steve had called Danny ahead of time, telling him what had occurred. Danny had promptly called you, informing you that he was coming over. Danny sat you down, the worst situations began running through your head. "Steve's okay. His mother was killed." You drew in a shaky breath. Danny's eyes ran over you. Your shaking hands raised themselves to your mouth. "We had a fight, before he left, and we didn't make up." Danny sighed and pulled you into a hug. "He loves you. Okay, that fight doesn't matter to him. He understood that you were worried about him." You nodded as Danny pulled you into a hug. "Can you take me too him?" You asked, your voice small and wounded. Danny nodded and helped you stand, walking you to his car. Danny drove to the hotel that Steve was in, being put there for the debriefing with the CIA. Steve looked morosely up at the pair of you as you entered the room. He had a full beard, a look you had never seen on him before, usually he had some scruff but nothing like this.

Danny entered the kitchen and pulled three beers from the fridge, handed one to Steve who popped the cap off, Danny did the same with yours before handing it to you. He took the lid off his own before sitting down. You placed your beer down on the coffee table, still in your standing position, still staring at Steve. Rounding the table, you sat on Steve's side before curling into his chest. "I'm sorry Steve." Steve dipped his head, burying his face in your hair, tears welling. He blinked, "I'm sorry too." He whispered into your locks, he wrapped an arm around you. Your fight was forgotten. He raised his head to talk with Danny about life. You stayed silent, relieved that Steve was back, upset that he had lost his mother. Every now and then, Steve would press a kiss to your hair, and his arms would tighten around you, reassuring himself that you were still there.
