"The illusion of control make the helplessness seem more palatable." Allie Brosh.

It had been a lot of things that had resulted in you walking away from the BAU, one major influence in your decision was that you never really fit in. As the team had worked together for years and never really had any new members join, they hadn't really had the practice of opening up to new people. Granted, Tara had joined around the same time as you and they had found a way of opening up to her. There was, however, difference in the pair of you joining, Tara had been thrown into the thick of a case, whereas, you had joined during a period where all the BAU was doing was consulting from the office. This showed a different dynamic. They were like the popular clique in high school only those they deemed worthy were allowed to join at least it felt t=like that to you. Another major reason was the Penelope Garcia the wonderfully bright and amazing person had kept poking in your family business and didn't quite understand that it was private and sealed by the FBI for a reason. These were the major factors that had influenced your resignation that had been handed in to Hotch, a few months before his own departure, and how on that warm Autumn evening you had walked away from the BAU for what you had hoped would be the last time. However, you knew that with your new career path it could very well meet with them again.

Thankfully, you had another career to fall back on, you had taken a couple of months off to travel and just live. You began to see the beauty in the world again after seeing the worst of humanity. The holiday included, Italy, where you saw the Colosseum, and had walked the ruins of Pompei. You visited Greece to see the Acropolis, then you had gone to Vietnam before finishing your adventure in Singapore. After returning, you had found a job in a Conviction Integrity Unit and had quickly worked your way up, being a former FBI profiler enabled you to work better holes in the defences case. You couldn't use the term FBI profiler but as well as receiving your law degree and passing the bar, you had received a doctorate in behavioural psychology and as a bachelor's in criminology. Conviction Integrity Unit would also on occasion contract you out to the FBI to represent their agents whenever they needed, mostly as a defence attorney. After working with BAU closing you knew the way most of them thought, even Luke Alvez despite the fact you had left shortly after him joining. What you didn't know was there a new agent had joined, his name was Stephen Walker. Not that him joining mattered really, after all you were very good at your job.

Your day had been going well until you had gotten the call from Emily. The coffee shop you usually went to didn't have a queue, there was one of you favourite baked pastry left, and you had gotten a good parking spot in the parking building as well as right before the call you had finished all of your paperwork meaning you could finish on time for once. Then you got the call.

At the BAU, Emily was not having the greatest day, but it wasn't the worst just yet, then she had gotten the call about Spencer about his court case and a case that the BAU needed to work on. After sending Garcia and the others to Bradenton, Florida. Now she was visiting Spencer to let him know that you would be taking his case. Spencer now sat opposite Prentiss in the visitor's room. They talked about Scratch and how that it could be him, before Prentiss talked about hiring a lawyer. "She's...well you know her, and we've worked with her before. Anyway, now she works with a Conviction Integrity Unit and occasionally works as a defence attorney for the FBI. I would like if you would let me reach out to her about representing you." Spencer sighed, "Emily, I really appreciate it, but you helping me could destroy your reputation at the Bureau." Emily looked at Spencer, daring him to fight her on this. "My battle, my choice. Please, let me help you. Tell me I can reach out to her." Spencer nodded, and Emily promised that they would get him out. Spencer had to admit, you being his lawyer wasn't who he thought might be. He remembered your exit and the guilt that the team had felt after him leaving. You had, however, forgiven them realising that it was best for you and that holding onto those emotions would only hurt you. The team had now after working with you had moved past their own feelings on the matter. Garcia, herself, had found it difficult to figure out how to work with you considering her past actions but after realising you had forgiven her, become completely devoted to Spencer's case.

Luke had been assigned to help you catch up on the case and everything Scratch had done. Luke realised that you were whip smart, beautiful, and able to catch up quickly as well as pointing out information that the team had missed. You gave the idea that maybe it wasn't Scratch, due to Reid's long history at the BAU. You also pointed out that Reid like everyone at the BAU worked multiple cases and even had someone infiltrate the BAU in the past. You hadn't been around then but being sort of friends with Reid, and reading all their old cases, you knew that some unsub masquerading as another unsub wasn't unheard off. With that information, Luke had dispatched Walker and Garcia to look over old cases that had Reid had worked primarily on.

A few cases stood out, you used Walker's, Luke's, and Tara's fresh eyes to look over the old cases that they hadn't worked on. Luke watched you everyone now and then, he admired your tenacity and the way that you worked methodically to build Reid a strong case. You found the connection between one case and how it connected with another. Luke realised that he was falling for you, not just his usual small amount of feelings, but deeper more meaningful feelings. The strong-willed lawyer who was happened to be a former FBI agent, he knew that you hadn't really gotten on with the team, but you didn't let the past dictate the way you worked on the case. Luke admired the way that you stood in front the judge calm and confident with the case you had laid out.

"All right, Ms. L/N, does your client wish to enter a plea at this time?" You stood calm in front of the team who sat behind you. "Actually, your honour, the defence would like the charges against my client to be dropped. Recent information has come to light and the BAU has found the two guilty parties both of whom admitted to the murder of Nadie Ramos, as well as drugging my client and framing him for the murder. They also admit to planting the drugs found in his car. The BAU has both of them in custody and will be able to produce them, should the court wish it." The judge held her hand out for the file, and the bailiff took it from you and handed over to her.

The prosecutor for the case, stood angrily "this is not the place for this discussion, this should have been in chambers, your honour." You turned and looked at him. "I offered to have this discussion in chambers, your honour. The prosecutor for the people refused to have this conversation. The BAU looked into all avenues for this case, their newer agents; SSA Stephen Walker, SSA Luke Alvez, and Doctor Tara Lewis, all looked into the older cases which Agent Reid worked and was the one had contact with those who were heavily affected by the case as well as anyone else involved. Given the BAU's history with the serial killer known as Mr. Scratch, it was logical for him to be their first suspect and given the evidence in front of the people, it was also logical to assume that agent Reid was the killer." You narrowed your eyes at eh prosecutor. The judge looked over the file and came to the same conclusion. "Agent Reid, please stand." Reid stood. "Given the evidence in front of me and the fact that the suspects have been found and are in custody, I have no choice but to drop the charges against the defendant, Agent Spencer Reid. As the evidence points to the suspects who are in custody. Due to his actions, however, I am sure agent Reid could face some repercussions from the FBI, but it will be my recommendation to the FBI that he attend counselling to work through what has happened here." With that, the case was dismissed.

Reid gave you a grateful look, the team shook your hand and Garcia had pulled you into a shaky hug. The team headed out of the courtroom, but Luke lingered. You turned after packing up, "oh, I'd thought you'd gone." Luke smiled wryly. "I had a question for you." You nodded, "if this is some legal question, I'm not sure you could afford my rates." You teased him. He laughed, shrugging, "I'm sure you're right. But on another note, I was wondering if you wanted to go on a date with me?" When you stayed silent, he explained. "This case it...uh...brought up feelings, and I got to work with you, I got to see your tenacity and your intellect. It made me realise, that I really like you and I would like the chance to prove to you I am more than some FBI agent." You grinned at him, "you don't have to prove anything. Yes. Yes, I will go out with you." He grinned and made to move forward when the door opened once more. "Hey, Rossi's buying dinner to celebrate Reid's freedom. Come on." Garcia paused as you both looked at her. "That includes you too, newbie."
