Steve turned the small velvet box in his hands as he sat outside of his house listening to the waves crash. He was lost in memories, so much so that he missed Danny appearing at his side. "You okay, babe?" Danny asked, taking a seat beside Steve. "Y/N's alive." Those two words seemed to explain Steve's mood and why he was turning the small velvet box in his hands. Danny took in a heavy breath. "What are you talking about?" Steve's brow furrowed. "She uh... showed up at my office. She uh...faked her death... she wanted to protect me. She looked wreaked, Danny, she looked like it killed her to hurt me. She uh...cried when she explained...don't think she's ever really cried like that in front of me ever." Steve scrubbed a hand down his face, fighting to keep his own tears at bay. "I thought that I lost her and uh... she's alive. Six months...six months she's been gone for six months. Officially dead for six months, I lost her." Danny nodded as his partner continued. "I still love her." Danny shrugged, "well those feelings don't go away overnight, they take a long time to work through." Steve looked over at Danny, tears swimming in his eyes. "Want to know the worst thing, I was going to propose." Steve lifted the velvet box to show Danny; but he didn't hand it over or show the ring to Danny. Danny nodded and asked hesitantly, "how do you feel about her?" Steve stayed silent; he gave a shaky inhale. Danny changed tactics. "How did you guys meet?" Steve's lips twitched.

Steve was chasing after a suspect who had bolted as soon as he saw Five-0 approaching. He turned a corner and skidded to a stop, the suspect was prone on the ground, unconscious. There was a woman standing above him welding a paddle. Steve looked over at the woman, who turned abruptly when she heard him approach. She raised it as if to hit Steve with the paddle. He gave a surrendering motion with his hands, pointing his gun up to the sky. "Nice swing." The woman grinned and pursed her lips. "Thanks." Steve holstered weapon and called for Chin. "Steve McGarrett, Five-0." The woman took his offered hand after chucking the paddle way, "Y/N L/N, FBI." Steve raised his eyebrows, "FBI?" You shrugged, "well former FBI soon anyway, the governor mentioned that Five-0 may have opening and wants me on board. If that's okay with you?" Steve grinned as Chin appeared around the corner. "We'll see, won't we?"

Danny scoffed, "of course you'd meet her while on a case and beating up a suspect." Steve's lips twitched once more. "How did you get her to agree on a date with you anyhow?" Steve shrugged, with a small twitch of his lips. "What did you do on your date? Solve a bank robbery? Deal with a hostage negotiation or a bomb threat?" Steve actually smiled at that.

Steve knocked on your apartment door, when you opened it, he gave a wide grin. He was dressed in a black suit, with a white shirt that had its collar popped. "You look stunning." He told you, you grinned at him. Steve handed you the bouquet of coloured roses. You, yourself, were dressed in your best outfit, the one saved for first dates. "Thank you." You smiled down at the roses, inhaling their light scent. Steve began to slightly fall for the way your eyes lit up when he saw you take the flowers. You placed them into a vase of water before you left. After you locked up, Steve offered you his elbow. You tucked your hand into the crock of elbow as he began to lead you down the pathway to his car. Like the gentleman he often claimed to be since you had met and joined Five-0, Steve opened the car door for you and helped you into the seat before shutting the door.

Steve took you to a seafront restaurant. You blushed as Steve, teased you about the first time the pair of you had met. After you had finished, Steve asked if you wanted to take a walk on the beach front. You accepted, which made Steve grin happily. You had slipped off your heels, so it was easier to walk on the sand. The straps swung from the tips of your fingers. Steve chuckled as you told him about the time you had crashed a getaway car when trying to flee in an undercover mission. The pair of you began walking back to Steve's truck. When you got back to the pavement, Steve helped you step into them before opening the door and helping you into your seat.

Danny grinned softly, "sounds like a good first date." Steve nodded, "it was." He whispered. Danny looked over at the wistfulness that lingered in Steve's eyes.

Steve looked over at you, he stood out on his deck as you stood on the sand with the small waves lapping at your feet. You had both just finished a dinner date at his place. Steve had suggested that the pair of you stargaze while finishing your remaining drinks. He had gone inside to drop off the glasses that you had used as well as to get a jacket. He walked down the grass and toed off his shoes, he hung the jacket over a lawn chair. He headed down the sand, the small grains shifting under his feet. Steve stepped so that he was beside you. "Steve." You said his name softly. He smiled at you, "Y/N." He returned the favour, surprising tenderness in his tone. His hand moved closer to your, slipping his hand into yours. He tangled his fingers with yours. He pulled you into a hug and kissed your forehead. You looked up at him, while he looked at you. His sea green eyes searching your face. He tucked a lock of hair behind your ear, his finger ran down your cheek. You smiled at him. Steve slipped his hand to the back of your neck, feeling the short hairs that were there. He smiled softly, he pulled you up slightly. You rested your hands on his chest, one moved to hold onto his arm. Steve's lips brushed yours, he pressed harder as you responded to his kiss. Sharp and sure movements covered by tenderness as well as an underlining sweetness.

Steve trailed off as he got lost in the memory. Danny watched his partner; he remembered all the painful memories and the hurt that went along with losing or breaking up with the love of your life. He had done the same when Rachel had left him. But he was lucky, she had never faked her death and she was willing to let him see Grace. He won't go through what Steve was going through. "Well at least you didn't kiss her during a gun fight." Steve huffed, lip twitching in humour. "Don't tell me you told her you loved her during a gun fight?" Steve huffed once more. "No Danny."

When Steve told you, he loved you when he had gotten back from a difficult case, you had both been together for a while now. You hadn't worked this case as you were recovering from a gunshot injury. You were on your last day of medical leave. The pair of you had finally moved in together. Right now, Steve had just gotten home to find you dancing around the kitchen as you made dinner, singing along to some song on the radio. You turned around and spotted Steve, you stopped dancing, your cheeks were flushed, you were giggling. The giggles finished when you locked eyes with Steve. Steve grinned at you; the smile was involuntary as were the next few words that fell from his lips. "I love you." You faltered in your next steps, before grinning widely. "I love you too."

Danny watched as Steve grinned happily at the memory. "I think you've answered your own question about what to do, buddy. I've never you as happy as you are when you're with her or talking about her. You fell apart when she wasn't here. Maybe you should think about what it was like without her and what its like with her and choose the one you'd rather live with." Danny clapped Steve on the shoulder as he stood up. "Good luck, babe." Steve stood and hugged Danny who hugged him back.

Steve waited nervously as he knocked on your apartment door, he felt sick to his stomach. You opened the door and saw Steve. When you locked eyes with Steve, he saw the change of emotions in your eyes, the flicker of hope, the soft love and the fear of losing him. "Can...uh...can I come in?" You nodded stiffly, letting Steve in. He moved into the lounge, he stopped and turned to face you. He took a deep breath. "I love you. I've loved you probably since you knocked out that guy with a paddle, I knew it for certain when you were dancing around my...our kitchen. I loved you when you were worried when I did something reckless and when you hid the fact you were actually impressed. I lost you, I thought you were dead for six months; it was hell. I wanted you back so badly. I get that you did it to protect me and I would have done the same thing. I love you for protecting me. I hated that you had to make that decision and that you had hurt me. I love you with everything and I never want to be without you again, ever." Steve pulled the velvet box out of his pocket and you spotted it gasping. Steve looked at you with tears running down his cheeks, he took a few steps forward and ran his finger down your cheek gently. You closed your eyes and leaned into his touch relishing it. When you opened your eyes, Steve had taken your left hand in his and knelt down. "Y/N L/N, will you marry me?" You gave a shaky nod, a watery 'yes' fell from your lips as you let Steve slip the ring on your finger and you fell into his arms. They tightened around you, as Steve held you close, relishing in the fact you were alive, that you were home and with him.
