Abe: going away
Tad: yes
Abe: is that so where are you heading for first
Tad: I'm not going far
Abe: farther than you can throw a bull by the rail
Tad: I'm going to live with Miss Sophia and the animals mama won't let me do anything
Abe: what will I do without you in Virginia
Tad: I don't want to go Virginia
Abe: say by the way you haven't had any supper have you
Tad: nope
Abe: there's some roast chicken in the cellar and some mince tarts left from supper what do you say Tadpole
Tad: I guess I am kinda of hungry
Abe: I could eat myself your mother is certainly a good cook
Tad: uh hmm
Abe: its our good luck too with the trouble she has keeping help these days she must work every minute of the day to keep this big household going by herself I often wonder how she manages as well as she does likes things nice too it says in the bible that a house divided against itself cannot stand
Tad: what do you mean pa day
Abe: third chapter of Mark I believe Tad that means that families have got to work together to be worth anything that goes for nations to accomplish anything worthwhile I can't go to Virginia and be a good Commander and Chief if aren't working with me and with mama Bobby and Willie
Tad: you can't
Abe: mama really has a tremendous job she is going to need the help of all of us
Tad: I take out the garbage and beat the rugs
Abe: its something deeper than that you may be pretty young to understand your mother is a very fine woman but she is keyed to a different pitch than we are she grew up in a beautiful southern home she always had things that were nice beautiful clothes and people to wait on her living with us especially with you and me must be hard on her at times you and I don't always remember how sensitive she is I think she really suffers sometimes when we don't behave according to her standards
Tad: pa day you never hurt anyone
Abe: not really but I think I hurt your mother when I forget to wipe the mud off my boots and leave my hat in a chair you must remember that she is working much harder taking care of all of us than she ever worked in her life before I think it is only fair that we try to help her all we can in the little things I mean its going to be very difficult for her to go to Virginia to be a Commander and Chief's wife
Tad: I think she's going to like it
Abe: perhaps but you and I can do a lot to make it easier for her we can try to protect her from the little things that upset her you and I could shelter a little like the old green umbrella she's going to need our help Tad
Tad: like the old green umbrella I think I know what you mean can it be a secret between us
Abe: or course
Tad: I only wanted a goat you know
Abe: you shall have one some day having one here isn't worth raising a storm you see what I mean
Tad: mama always hated storms didn't she I'll be the best old umbrella you ever saw you mean no more fights with Caleb Norton
Abe: I wouldn't encourage it
Tad: he's going to Virginia you know his papa is going to work on a paper there
Abe: um I didn't know
Tad: I might have to punch him some day
Abe: well We'll handle that when the time comes now how about getting into bed my little green umbrella
