CHAPTER FORTY ONE

-: fourth year :-

── IN WHICH SIRIUS
OFFERS ADVICE

. . .

The sound of parchment tearing echoed around the room and Harry froze. He hadn't meant to be so harsh with it, and hoped that the noise hadn't woken anyone up.

Discarded the now open envelope on the floor, Harry pushed himself around as he heard movement, eyes landed on Jane turning over in the bed above him. She murmured something in her sleep that was incoherent, but after watching for a couple more seconds, Harry could confirm that he hadn't woken up.

Her breathing returned to it's regular sound, and although there was an absence of three others, Harry was somewhat reminded of his dorm in Gryffindor tower. Of course, sharing a room with four other guys was a lot different that sharing one with a girl, but the comfort that he felt during his nights laid awake had returned.

And it smelt a lot nicer in Jane's room - something like lavender and clean air as opposed to whatever body spray Seamus had brought combined with the plant Neville currently had. It was cleaner too, and just as cosy in it's own right.

Harry settled back down into his seat against the bed frame, adjusting it so that the sharp corner didn't jab into his back. Seated comfortably, he picked up the envelope and extracted the longer sheet of parchment.

Harry,

I didn't laugh, I swear. Harry knew he probably laughed. You remind me of your dad sometimes - he got like this when trying to talk to Lily, all freaked out over the littlest of things. That I did laugh at, but I'll try not to for you. Oh yep, he definitely laughed.

As for advice, what can I say? After certain time away I might have lost my touch with the ladies, but I can try my best. Try not to annoy her into doing things - James tried that tactic several times and to this day me and Moony still think that he annoyed her into going on that first date. But it seems you don't have to worry about first dates, right? Be nice to her, respect boundaries - that's an important one that I didn't get until I was older - and tell her things.

That sounds weird. I mean about yourself, it doesn't do any good to hide things. Don't listen to what they say in Twelve Fail-Safe Ways to Charm Witches, I would send you my old copy if I had one, but it isn't as good as people make out, pages full of cliché crap. All those help books mention being mysterious, but if you really want someone to like you back then you be their friend first. Don't go diving straight into a relationship. Friends first, okay?

Harry had done that - or at least he thought so. He and Jane were pretty good friends, right? Although he was sure of it, a little anxiety fluttered and he turned to look up at her, smiling at the peaceful expression on her face. Yeah, they were friends.

The summer spent with a pretty girl is something I can only dream of these days, so spend that time wisely before you go back to Hogwarts - which in the eye of a muggle will seem rather weird, so maybe put an idea in her head that you do learn some of the same stuff.. maybe about that fellow who wrote the plays, who was called something about shaking spears.

It was Harry's turn to laugh at something; hearing about Wizarding takes on Muggle things were always so amusing. He stiffled his laughted in his fist, returning to the letter. I didn't listen as much as I should've done in muggle studies - I didn't really care about learning, I was in there to piss off my parents.

Harry didn't know too much about his Godfather, but what he did know was that he wasn't a big fan of his parents. That was obvious enough, both in his words and in the letter. Sirius had grown up as a Pureblood, and Harry had no doubt that he didn't enjoy the company of his parents and he knew that he didn't hold the same mindset as them  either.

It sounds like you've met a good one - she knows about the dog star? If she actually does take you stargazing see if you can learn more names, you might end up finding one that you recognise. My brother - you won't know about him - but he was called Regulus. Harry couldn't quite believe it - Jane had shown him Regulus and Sirius, the two brothers,

I did listen in Astronomy, mind you, and if I remember correctly it's in the Leo constellation, which is shaped as a sickle - no not the coin, but the muggle tool. Right again - Sirius did seemed to have enjoyed Astronomy. You'll know more about that than I will, I skipped those lessons of Muggle Studies.

It's up to you to tell her about Hogwarts and magic. I don't suggest doing it until later on, but don't lie to her about things, and if you trust her then tell her. Harry wasn't afraid off admitting he would trust Jane with everything and anything. But he still wasn't sure, maybe he should leave that to Flora - that was safer for her anyway, he didn't know a lot about Voldemort but if he was going to take anything from the attack of Mr Roberts' family at the Quidditch World Cup, Harry knew that Jane could just be a little bit in danger.

I can only advise you so much, Harry. Your father is James after all, and he was rather good with ladies.. or Lily, eventually. I'm hoping you're like him in more than just looks, so just trust your instincts, and have fun. Harry could almost feel the 'whilst you still can' that wasn't physically written but seemed to haunt the page.

Don't let any worry ruin this summer, that can wait until you go back to Hogwarts, okay? And don't freak out, you'll do just fine. I'll bet a few galleons on it.

- Sirius

Harry couldn't help but feel incredibly comforted by the familiar writing that had helped him through the entirety of the last year. He had seen Sirius on the night of June 24th right after he had seen Cedric die and Voldemort return, but there was no news about him seeing him again.

He just hoped that they would see each other soon, and he could tell Sirius more about Jane and the incredibly summer they had had together. But he wouldn't worry about it - Sirius had said not to.

He had no idea what would be coming in the next week or so. No idea at all.
