Schizoid Personality Disorder is a condition in which people avoid social activities and interacting with others. A schizoid personality disorder is a type of eccentric personality disorder.

》 Cause of this disorder is unknown. It may be related to schizophrenia and shares many of the same risk factors.

》 Other risk factors include:

environmental factors, which seem to have the most impact during childhood

experiencing abuse or neglect as a child

having an emotionally detached parent

This disorder occurs more commonly in men than women.

》 Schizoid personality disorder is not as disabling as schizophrenia. It doesn't cause the disconnection from reality (in the form of hallucinations or delusions) that occurs in schizophrenia.

》 People with schizoid personality disorder are:

Emotionally detached and prefer being by themselves rather than with other people

》 People with schizoid personality disorder often:

Don't have or want close relationships with others—they prefer to be alone

Aren't interested in physical contact and sex—they often don't date or marry

Don't seem to care what other people think of them

Seem cold and aloof because their face rarely changes to show happiness or sadness

Have problems expressing anger

Choose jobs and hobbies that don't require interacting with people

》 This disorder is diagnosed based on a psychological evaluation. The health care provider will consider how long and how severe the person's symptoms are.

》 People with schizoid personality disorder often do well in relationships that don't focus on emotional closeness. They tend to be better at handling relationships that focus on:

Work

Intellectual activities

Expectations

》 People with this disorder often won't seek treatment. For this reason, little is known about which treatments work. Talk therapy may not be effective. This is because people with this disorder may have a hard time forming a good working relationship with a therapist.

》 Treatment options :

Cognitive behavioral therapy

Medication

Group therapy

》 Schizoid personality disorder is a long-term (chronic) illness that usually does not improve much over time. Social isolation often prevents the person from asking for help or support.
Limiting expectations of emotional intimacy may help people with this condition make and keep connections with other people.
