if you peered beyond the railing
and out onto the sea,
the water was colored blue, green, and gray
moving at a leisurely place with tiny ripples
continuing toward the shore

if you peered beyond the railing
and out onto the sea,
the tides had come high to soften the sand
and reach between its layers, soaking it wet
up against the houses

if you peered beyond the railing
and out onto the sea,
the cloud cover was so thick that the sky was
no longer visible, not even a trace, beckoning
dismal moods instead of mellow ones

but if you peered harder beyond that railing
and out at the sea,
there was a peachy ball of light touching the edge
of the cliff, glowing yellows and oranges,
while pretty pink puddles reflected from the water
like stones bleeding dye after skipping
across the ocean
