Abigail was just sat in the waiting area, watching in awe as doctors rushed around. Sure they were just doing their jobs but yet Abigail couldn't help but admire them. She missed it. The thrill of surgery, the feeling of saving a persons life. What she'd give to be in a OR right now. Abigail is a Neurosurgeon. She didn't want to go into general like her mother or sister, it just wasn't her. The complex ways of the brain and its delicacy had always enticed her. She hadn't been in a surgery for a month or so but to her it felt like so much longer. After her wife's death, she quit her job, sold the house and packed up, moving to Seattle. She wasn't sure what she was going to do but she had a somewhat fresh start and for that she was grateful.

Flashback
Abigail was sat next to her wife's hospital bed, her head in hands, praying she would just wake up. Now Abigail isn't a religious person at all, but if there was someone or something out there, she had to try. Otherwise she'd just feel useless. Kayleigh had gotten in a car accident with a drunk driver and now she's in a coma on life support. Abby new that she didn't want to be on a machine to live but she just couldn't let go, not yet.

She would sit there talking to her for hours on end, about how much she missed her, how the bed felt empty and cold without her in it. How the house was quiet and lonely, how she missed waking to her arm being slung over her waist, feeling her little snores on the back of her neck. Her low groans of annoyance when their alarm went off in all hours of the morning for work. Even their arguments about how Abigail would spend so much time at work, or even the petty things like what was for dinner or who loves who more.

Kayleigh had been on life support for 30 days now. Abigail new it was time to pull the plug and even though she'd had so much time to prepare she still couldn't bare to think about it. As the doctors came into to turn of her machines, Abby just sat there and spoke to her wife like nothing had changed, nothing was going on, like she was still awake.

Once the machines had been switched off there was just the devastatingly long wait until Kayleigh's body caught up. Abigail sat and watched her wife's chest slowly stop rising as the monitors started to beep. Thankfully they were turned off not long after the beeping began. Once she was alone with her wife she laid her head across her chest as tears streamed down her face onto the hospital gown below her.

"It's okay baby. I'll be okay. You're okay. You can go."

With those words said Kayleigh's chest rose for one last time, then she was gone. Abigail just sat there and let out a string of sobs. Before getting up, attempting to compose herself  before walking out of the room. She now had to go back to the house she shared with her wife, alone.
End of flashback

She was pulled out of her trance by a voice calling her name. "Abigail Grey? Is that you?" Abigail looked up to see a man she hadn't seen in a long time. Richard Webber. "Richard?" Abigail stood up to be wrapped in a hug. "What are you doing here?" Richard asked releasing her from his grasp.

"I just moved here" she said awkwardly stuffing her hands in her pockets. "I came to see Meredith. I still don't have a place to live or work so, I'm just gonna crash with her for a while."

"Have you considered looking for a job here?" Abigail hadn't thought about it, at all actually. I mean it makes sense, why couldn't she? She'd be working with her sister, maybe finally be able to make up for time spent apart. A smile crept its way onto her face at the thought of it.

"I mean I'll think about it, who would I have to talk to?"

"Dr Owen Hunt. He's chief at the minute. I'll put in a good word for you."
Just then Meredith showed up from finishing her shift. "You ready to go?"

———

As they arrived at Meredith and Dereks house, Abigail looked around, marvelling at the life her sister had built for herself. She had the house, the husband, the good job and the kids. Abby couldn't help but feel slightly jealous of her. But now there was a chance that she could be apart of that life too.

After dinner Abigail spent all night with her niece and nephew. Zola had warmed up to her rather quickly. They sat and played with almost all of Zola's toys, leaving a rather big mess behind. They pulled funny faces at each other, causing the other to giggle. Abigail couldn't get enough of Zola's little giggle. It was so infectious. It even made Bailey smile, which was as adorable as it sounds.

By the end of the night Abigail and Zola had both passed out on the couch, the latter cuddled into the formers chest, with a bright pink blanket covering them surrounded by stuffed animals. Meredith just stood in front of them looking down with pure joy. She couldn't have imagined a better reaction to her daughter meeting her aunt. She didn't want to ruin the moment so she just left the two cuddled up as she put Bailey to bed before heading to sleep herself.

———

Abigail woke up to a pair of tiny hands gently tapping her on the face. Her eyes slowly fluttered open to see Zola stood on the couch attempting to slap her in the face. She pulled out her phone to see the time was early, early enough that Meredith and Derek weren't yet awake. There was no sign of Zola going back to sleep, so Abigail decided to make breakfast. As she made her way over to the kitchen, Zola just waddled slowly behind her. As Abigail watched her little niece, she couldn't imagine not having met here. She had only really known this child for just over a day but yet she would do anything for her.

When Meredith and Derek had woken up, they made their way out of their room to see Abigail and Zola in the kitchen, talking to each other. Well Abby was talking Zola was just sort of babbling. Zola was sat in her high chair with what looked to be oatmeal and strawberries smeared across her face, while Abbie was shoulder deep in a cupboard clearly trying to find something. "Looking for something?" Meredith finally spoke up, with Bailey in her arms, grabbing her chin. Merediths voice clearly startled Abby because she smacked her head on the top of the cupboard as she flinched at the sudden voice behind her.

"Umm, yeah actually. Just a cup for Zola, I figured giving her a glass wasn't a good idea." Abby laughed awkwardly as Zola giggled loudly in response. Meredith let out a quiet chuckle as she made her way over to another cupboard and pulled out a sippy cup for Zola, handing it to her sister.

"So you got any plans today?" Meredith asked, knowing full well that her sister had nothing to do. "Umm no, you know that."
"Good, you're coming to work with me." Abigails head turned towards her sister, her eyebrows raised. "Are you serious?" Meredith just nodded her head in reply.
"Yeah, you should get to know the place if you're going to be working there. I heard you and Richard talking last night. I think you should go for it, it'll be really good for you."
Abby smiled gratefully at her. "Thank you Mer. I mean it."
"Alright, alright. Don't go soft of me now Abs." The two just chuckled before heading to get ready for the day ahead of them.

AN so I'm not sure how I fell about the ending but you know :)
