TW: Mentions of attempted suicide.

One of Abigail's biggest regrets in life was that she never visited her mother before she died. Sure Ellis Grey wasn't the best mother in the world, in fact far from it, but she was still her mother. She was the a big part of the reason she was who she was, and for that she was somewhat grateful. Now of course she wasn't thankful for all the trauma she, and her sister, lived through as children but for the parts that made her a brilliant surgeon, the parts that made her compassionate and caring.

Abby had tried everything in her power to not become her mother. She knew what being on the receiving end of those cold and brutal ways, and never in a million years would she want somebody else to feel that. But she had to admit, not visiting her mother sounded like a very Ellis Grey thing to do. Even if she didn't want to see her mother she should've still been there for Meredith, she should've been by her sisters side when their mother died. But she wasn't, and for that she couldn't be more sorry.

"So Maggie Pierce is our half-sister?" Abby asked in utter shock. The last time a sister showed up Abby wasn't there, she was in Boston living her life not quite care free. But she obviously knew all about her fathers other children from Meredith but she never got to meet them. When Meredith called to tell Abby that Lexie had died, yet another regret added to Abigail's apparently growing list.

"Apparently." Meredith answered shortly, sounding  rather skeptical. "But I don't remember mom being pregnant. Do you?"

"Mer, I was what, three? I don't remember what I did last week never mind back then." Abby explained with a light chuckle. "Although I do remember the carousel, and the hospital. Then we just upped and moved to Boston and lived life as if Seattle didn't exist." She tried to recall details but nothing sprung to mind.

Meredith began telling "That was the night she tried to kill herself. She and Richard had an argument whilst we were on the carousel. You weren't really big enough to go on without an adult but she didn't care. When the ride was over she dragged us home, told us not to-"

"Not to call 911 until she passed out." Abby interrupted, slowly remembering watching her mothers hands dripping with blood before hitting the ground with a thud. "You were so calm, I had no idea how you did it."

"I had to be, you were stood next to me sobbing. Although you had mastered the being quite thing." Meredith half joked, attempting to lighten the mood but alas failing. "In fact I don't think you stopped sobbing the whole night. You also wouldn't let go of my hand, and hiding your face behind my back whenever someone would look at us."

"I was afraid we'd done something wrong, I couldn't help but think that she would wake up and be mad at us because we didn't let her go." Abby admitted. She hated when her mother was mad at her because she was always strangely calm, she would yell but it was all controlled. Which to Abby was scarier that someone flying off the handle because it meant everything she said was thought through and calculated. It meant that she meant it, every single word.

The two sisters just sat there in silence for a couple of minutes, neither one knowing what to say. That was until Abby spoke up again. "What about that time we were at the hospital after we moved to Boston? What was that about?" Abby saw a faint sense of realization wash over Meredith's face, before she started talking again.

"That's it. I remember her belly got big, and she cried, a lot, then her water broke in the kitchen. I was scared cause it reminded me of the blood from when she slit her wrists. We went to the hospital, there was a baby crying and mom was crying, then we went home. And her belly wasn't big anymore. We just moved on with our lives as if nothing had happened. I was in first grade, you were at daycare and we all forgot about it."

"Holy shit. Maggie Pierce is our sister."

Margret Pierce had found the family she came looking for. It just wasn't the family she had hoped, nor wanted. So she had handed in her resignation, and in classic Grey-Sloan fashion, the entire hospital knew about it. As she walked through the corridors trying to mind her own business, she felt someone grab her arm and pull her into an on call room. When she finally looked up, she saw a member of her new found family. Abby.

"You're my sister." Abby spat out nervously. She had never really known any family apart from Ellis and Meredith, and much like Maggie, she needed people to like her. She took a deep breath, composing herself before repeating. "You're my sister."

"I am." That was all Maggie could say, after how Meredith had reacted she had no idea how Abby would react. That was until she was engulfed in a hug by the taller woman, which she quickly returned. This was the familial comfort she came looking for.

"Look, I know Meredith didn't react so well but shes not good with new people, or sisters. She was the same with Lexie, the other sister we never really knew about." Abby rambled as she pulled away. "Anyway, she will come around eventually, you just need to give her time. She just needs time to process. So please, don't leave. You came here looking for your family. You'll get it, you just need to give it time."

Maggie just stood there as the woman in front of her's pager went off before she left for a consult. But her words were just floating through Maggie's head. Just give it time.

Later on that day, Abby found Meredith sat on a gurney reading something, what it was, Abby wasn't sure. "What'cha reading?" Abby singsonged as she got closer to her big sister.

"Mom's journal." Meredith answer in a very monotone voice not lifting her eyes from the page. Even when she felt her sister moving to lay next to her with her head in her lap. Almost instinctively Meredith's fingers started running through Abby's hair. She sighed in contempt at the familiar feeling, closing her eyes just taking the the moment.

"Do you ever miss her?" Abby's voiced quietly.

"Sometimes yeah, of course I do. She was our mother." Abby couldn't help but feel guilty about the fact that she never said goodbye to her mother before she died. "And I know you do to. Stop feeling guilty Abs. There is nothing you can do about it now, and to be honest, I don't blame you. You got it worse that I did."

Abby just sighed, she knew her sister was right. She couldn't change the past now. Nobody can.
