A blanket of night had already fallen over the kingdom through the time Milk Bread cookie and (Y/N) were waiting for the royals to return, or anybody for goodness sake. Eventually, even the knight switched out to another one after hours had passed. They had passed the time tracing in the dirt, talking about aimless things, and wondering where Sopapilla cookie was being held at. They had both assumed she was placed in a different area because their cells were the only ones in this small dungeon space, as if it were reserved specifically for them.

(Y/N) leaned up against one of her walls and whined "Will they ever care to return? I'd actually love to know what's going on."

"Unfortunately the king is notorious for leaving everybody with long waiting times. It's almost as if he doesn't know how to complete things in a timely manner," Milk Bread gritted.

"I'm guessing you'd know all about that," (Y/N) added.

The elder stayed quiet for a little while as if she was contemplating something. Shifting on her knees, she scooted as close as she could to her bars across from (Y/N). "Did I ever tell you about how much I know about those two?"

(Y/N) perked a little. "No, were you like, their personal maid or something?"

She giggled at (Y/N)'s funny guess, but shook her head. "Way more than that, dear."

"Then what were you to them?"

The elder held a soft smile as she glanced at the ground, nostalgia clouded her face. "Dark Cacao's almost-mother." (Y/N) subconsciously let her jaw drop a bit.

"I know I sound as senile as they now think me to be, but it's true that I raised Dark Cacao like a mother."

"Why didn't his actual mother take care of him? What happened between them? Did she..?" (Y/N)'s words trailed off as realization hit her. A sympathetic glance was given by Milk Bread.

"Yes, dear. But I'm not allowed to say how so," the elder gave a quick glance to the soldier that was standing resilient outside their cells. Even though it looked like he was a mannequin, he definitely was listening intently to their conversations. Most likely for incriminating them.

(Y/N) silently mouthed to her Does everybody else know? Milk Bread nodded in response.

"Dark Cacao was and always has been a sweet heart," the elder flicked away a weird bug from her lap "but he does have some similarities to his father."

"It definitely makes sense to me, did you see how he confronted the king? He absolutely is the king's son," (Y/N) snickered.

"I was there from the moment he was in the nursery. He's always been as handsome as he is now, I managed to catch a glimpse of you giving starry eyes when you first met him," Milk Bread winked, making (Y/N) flush red. She was lucky that it was too dark to see her face.

"Well, it's been a while since I've seen a good looking prince," (Y/N) whispered. Milk Bread couldn't help but laugh.

"You won't find any prince as handsome as my boy. Every time he went down into the village to greet the villagers, you'd think a god had fallen from the heavens and was seducing every cookie in the streets."

(Y/N) could only imagine hordes of cookies swooning over him, heart eyes and everything. She snorted at the idea.

"But anyways... I'm proud of him. He's come so far in life and yet still has a heart of pure sugar and courage of a million soldiers," the maid's voice trailed off. "He's destined to be a great king in his future."

(Y/N) hummed back. She really did believe that Dark Cacao was a great cookie, but she also worried for his spontaneous outbursts similar to his father. His pupils dilated in the same way, his frown was strikingly similar, and she could swear his voice was the same gruff when he yelled. (Y/N) could almost feel like he was there.

...Wait.

"I'm proud of you too, Milk Bread," the knight spoke, turning his head.

"Your highn-?"

"Shh. Don't say anything. I managed to switch places with the knight who was supposed to be on duty now. We have to work quick before my father notices we're gone," his hands fumbled at his waist where the keys were attached to his armor, swiftly unlocking (Y/N)'s cell first. She desperately held up her wrists for him to unlock the tight chains that were constricting her.

"How did you..?" (Y/N) looked up at this helmet that was concealing his face.

"No time right now. Let me get Milk Bread."

Just as Dark Cacao had popped off her cuffs, a thunder of footsteps were barreling towards the entrance of the dungeon. (Y/N)'s breath quickened in panic, there wasn't any spare time to get Milk Bread.

"You won't be able to get her!" She stood up, almost passing out from the blood rush as she leaned into Dark Cacao for support.

"Don't pass out on me, I beg," he joked. (Y/N) shook her head.

"I can't, not right now."

Her gaze drifted over to Milk Bread, her focus was on the growing sound of soldiers making their way towards them. Her expression was unreadable.

"Get your wrists ready, I need to be able to get your out of here quickly," Dark Cacao commanded, gambling with the lock on her cell.

"No. Leave me here. You don't have time, sweetheart," Milk Bread commanded firmly. The prince ignored her and continued, refusing to leave her there.

"Cacao! Just take her! You know you can't take us both, we both can barely run as it is," she raised her voice.

"They'll torture you for answers, I-I can't leave you here," the prince began to choke up. The lock was jammed because of how rough he was trying to pry open the door.

"I promise I won't say anything. I'm almost due and you know it. You know where to go with her where nobody else will know," her voice reassured.

(Y/N) tried to find Milk Bread's eyes in the shadows, but all she could see were the tears reflecting the purple glow of the candles in the corridor. The ground began to shake with how close the soldiers were getting. Dark Cacao took a sharp breath as his hands shakily let go of the key. Both of the cookies only stared at him as he stiffened up, his helmet pointed towards the elderly cookie that was slouching against the wall. The sound was dangerously close now.

"I love you," he whimpered. Without another word, he scooped up (Y/N) and dashed towards the opposite exit, beginning their escape.
