The Darling Jewel of Ruemreon's High Court

-------

THE NEXT day, the witch that Malin mentioned came to Ruemreon.

Raffe had anticipated encountering a figure akin to the witches portrayed in the books he had come across in the past — a witch dressed in a long black cloak and a pointed hat, with a crooked nose and a wart on her chin. But the one standing before him looked like a rainbow, an image the exact opposite of the ones grannies used to scare their grandkids to bed.

Malin did mention she was a peculiar witch, but Raffe never imagined she would have light cotton candy pink hair, cherry lips, and icy blue eyes. A four feet tall woman dressed in a mustard yellow floral dress and purple boots, with a lemon green bag clutched in her arms. And she looked young — like a teenage girl still in puberty.

But the one thing that really stood out in her appearance was the fact that she was a purebred faie. With her hair high up in a ponytail, her pointy ears were showing.

The witch curtsied and looked at Raffe and Soren. "Your Majesties," she said. "I have come as you requested."

"I — uh, yes. Thank you for being here, lady...?"

"Xayide."

"Xayide," Raffe repeated. "It's an honor to meet you. Please, have a seat."

Xayide sat down in the chair across from him and Soren. Malin and Jadel stood silently behind them.

"So," Raffe prompted. "I am sure Malin told you about our situation?"

"That your beloved consort is trying to kill you?" Xayide's piercing blue eyes turned to Soren like she was perusing his entire being. "Yes," she replied. "He told me he's been cursed."

"And is he?" Raffe asked.

There was a gravid pause before she answered.

"Yes." Her eyes turned to look at Raffe. "And so are you. And him," she said and looked at Jadel.

Everyone's mouth fell open except Xayide. The room went silent and Raffe looked at her in shock.

Soren was the first one who spoke up.

"W-what?" Soren stammered, dumbfounded. "What do you mean?"

Xayide shook her head slowly, creeping her eyes at all of them like a disappointed mother who caught her children lying. "You lot have really no idea, do you?"

"About what?" Jadel answered. "Wait for a damn second, lady. How can we be sure that you're not talking nonsense? Are you—are you even a real witch? You looked way younger than what we have in mind, to be honest."
