"ARE YOU sure this is a good idea?" Raffe asked his father when they were alone in the High King's sitting room later that evening.

High King Alizade was flipping pages through several monetary reports. He sipped his wine before absently muttering, "About what?"

Raffe rolled his eyes. "You know exactly what I'm talking about."

"I'm not quite sure what you're talking about, son. If you would please enlighten me."

Letting out an exasperated sigh, Raffe replied, "About the Idana nitwit. Are you sure about letting him go with the Imperial Army?"

High King Alizade cocked his eyebrows. "I don't see why not."

Raffe made a face. "Yes, well, it's perfectly harmless to let him go on a dangerous mission that will probably leave a bad taste to our faie neighbors if anything's to happen to him. That will not sour our relationship with them at all. It's not as though he's important to the future of the empire or anything." He felt like smashing a fist into someone else's face.

"I'm pretty sure Soren could handle himself. Especially if he can slam the Crown Prince into the wall without even touching him."

Raffe cringed and made a disgruntled noise. "Everyone's treating me like an extra. I don't know why you're expecting me to rule an empire."

High King Alizade's eyebrows shot up, whipped his head to look at Raffe, and boomed a laugh. Raffe scowled. But the King just clutched his stomach and cackled again, ignoring his son's incredulous look towards him.

"This is not funny," Raffe grated out.

Wiping the tears away from his eyes, High King Alizade made two tries before clearly saying, "Ah, my lad. I can't believe I would live the day to hear your whines again."

Raffe bristled. "I'm not whining."

High King Alizade sniggered again and shook his head, amusement flashed faintly on his face. "Seeing you like this is truly a pleasure, Raffe."

"Father—"

"No matter how you denied it, you mellowed out from your usual uptight self. Now you seemed to unwind and be free and just, I don't know, whine, like now. I wonder what caused you to change."

"I told you I didn't—"

"Surely it's your feisty faie, is it not?" The king continued without acknowledging Raffe's retorts. "I knew, I just knew, from the very first time he punched your face, that he'll be perfect for you."

"Let me speak, damn it." He resigned a look at the ceiling. "You and your twisted view of things."

More chuckling, then the king said, "Soren will be a good influence on you and this empire."
