Tris POV

Ever since I was a little girl I've been different from the others here in my faction. Whenever I'd have some free time my mind would wander off and I'd picture myself in adventures, going behind the wall... I think I'm the only one that ever made myself the following question: what's really out there? Would I ever get to know? Somehow the feeling of the unknown intrigued me, but I learned the hard way my place was between these infamous walls. There's nothing for me out there, out of the factions, out of our system. My faction is Abnegation. The others always call us 'stiffs'. We live a simple life. Selfless, dedicated to helping others. We even feed the factionless, the ones who don't fit anywhere. The other factions are Erudite, the smart ones; Amity who farm the land; Candor, who values honesty and order and Dauntless, our protectors. Some people think Dauntless are crazy, which they kind of are. I know I did until I decided to join that faction during my ceremony. I had to protect myself after all, given the fact I wasn't like everybody else. I was Divergent, which meant I didn't fit in just one faction. And being so in this society meant there wasn't a place for me, unless I learn to hide.

That's why I found myself at the bottom a large dark pit with all eyes on me as the newly joined Dauntless people expected me to jump. It was some sort of test. Dauntless was fearless, and unless I wanted to blow my cover I had to do it. I closed my eyes and all of the sudden I was flying down into the hole and the next thing I know a net catched me, making me bounce a bit before I could catch my breath and embrace the idea I was still alive. Hell I felt alive with all that adrenaline running through my veins. This is living.

I felt myself being lowered to the ground when my eyes made contact with beautiful dark orbs. Then a pair of strong hands grabbed me and settled on my feet. When he asked my name my tongue tangled a bit. Somehow my old name didn't sue me anymore so he said I could change it for something shorter. I smiled at his words and named myself again, feeling proud of it.

"First jumper, Tris! Welcome to Dauntless" the beautiful stranger shouted my name and everyone cheered. Words cannot describe how happy I felt.

After introducing himself as Four, he asked us to follow him and showed us around. He introduced us to the center of life in Dauntless, the pit. But the most shocking thing were our dorms, if you could call them so. Shared bathroom, shared showers, shared EVERYTHING. I knew I'd get used to it, and it was only during the next 10 weeks. Four didn't give us time to complain anyway, he just barked for us to get changed and meet him as soon as possible. I must admit I felt some sort of joy when my Abnegation clothes were burned. I wasn't that girl anymore. My father had fought hard against my attitude my entire life, and it involved several really hard punishments, but the truth was I was anything but submissive. It was bound to eventually get me in some trouble. I had to keep a low profile so no one would get suspicious. As wild and carefree Dauntless are, they also know how to take orders and stay quiet when they're told to. I'd have to work hard on that.

During lunch I was able to meet other initiated like me. Christina, a girl I had met back in the train was from Candor. Then there was this guy Will from Erudite, pretty much a book worm but a good guy after all. After that, Four got into explaining how the training would be and how, according to the scores we get from the training, we'd get different jobs... and here's the beauty of it. The worst ranked ones would be leaving Dauntless forever, only to be factionless. There was no way I could beat people around me. Most were way bigger than me, or just more skilful. I was in deep shit.

The late news of me might becoming a factionless really soon got me on my nerves. There was this guy Peter from Candor that was driving me crazy. He'd stalk me like a hawk and was always there to make me realize how weak and clumsy I was. He even called the factionless my new family. I felt my blood boil to the mention of that, but he also had me scared as hell of him. He was really big and could easily take me down. I tried to clear my head and focus on my stuff. I couldn't let him get to me, or else I'd never improve enough to be on the other side of the line, the accepted ones.
