Within the bustling walls of the hospital, a boy has been taken into emergency care.

He lays now on a clean white bed. The only sound in the small room comes from the soft wheezing of the respirator fitted to his face, and the beeping machine keeping his pulse.

His parents have just made it to the lobby, rushing in to overwhelm to the receptionist. Where is their son? What happened?

What happened?

The sun is beginning to set, and through the boy's window, the streaming rays light his freckled face and his sandy hair.

On his nightstand rest his belongings. His phone buzzes with a text, then another.

Maggs: Ethan.

Maggs: Ethan you better fucking be okay.

Maggs: There's a man here asking so many questions, and he's told us what's happened to you.

Maggs: When you wake up, please text me back.

Maggs: We need to talk, really badly. It's about Joshua.

Maggs: Please be okay.

The phone vibrates insessantly, buzzing around on the nightstand with each text. The boy's eyes flicker beneath his eyelids, but he doesn't yet open them. He doesn't wake.

Beside him, the heart monitor keeps a steady rhythm, and the oxygen machine helps him breathe.

He's alive.
